My deep psychological problems were clearly at work here. Even after reading @Chris Todd 's post, I still didn't get it. My 12 year old pointed it out to me in like 3 seconds, and she's not even a fan of P basses...I did mention I was embarrassed, right?

Me too! I was really unsure about how it would turn out tone wise, especially given how similar the three pickups I installed were, or seemed to be at least. Thanks Tim
Didn't want to start a new thread and figured there's some other builders watching - check your local big box store wood section whenever you go in! These weren't necessarily less expensive than a trip to my preferred lumber store, but take a peek at this!

You can bet your boots I check the maple every time I walk through there. I grab anything with perfectly straight grain parallel to an edge too.

Makes sense. HD stock maple is what I used for my first build - I laminated I think 7 pieces of it to make my 8 string neck. Good stuff!
