Had to install a new jack in my Rex5 today , so I went ahead and wired it in 18v . I'll play it after supper and see what I think ...
What pre?
There won't be any volume/output or tone difference.
The difference is headroom. With my pups jacked up to the max height I could distort the pups/pre by hitting my B string hard at 9 volts. Can't do it running 18 volts.

That's a good or bad thing depending on what you're going for. :D

On a side note, wanna' make the switchcraft/cannon jack on your Spector last the longest? Use right angled instrument cables. The tug on straight cables creates too much torque that messes up up the insides of these types of jacks (actually any jack, but these especially).

really? that is good information... I always use right angle cable (more visually appealing), but now I'm really happy I do.

Good point about the cable.

Headroom is definitely a benefit of the extra voltage. The headroom does suppress the growl a little in the USA circuits. The growl is one of the "side-effects" of the design... because the USA 9 and 18v circuits use operational amplifiers to boost the signal from the pups, they're prone to the same over-saturation and signal loss that makes OpAmp based circuits muddy sounding in the mix. Except the Haz-Made circuits have multiple OpAmps and distort the over-saturated signal (during attack), pushing it through the series of OpAmps with no loss of signal. This is why the NS-2 was such a revelation in 1979... it cut through the mix with an aggressive growl that was new to the bass world.

I've played both side-by-side and the 9v has growl without any effort. Whereas you can clean the signal out of the 18v enough to loose the growl or make it nearly perceivable.

And without question the volume output for the 18v is about 30x40% greater than the 9v NS-2™ circuit.

I'm not sure if doubling the voltage in one of the other circuits such as the TonePump or the Aguilar OBP circuits will increase output as well.

And if you've doubled the TonePump I'll be interested to hear how it sounds. I've heard people in the past say that the TonePump doesn't work well when doubled.

It will not.
It just increased headroom. I've done this to both Aguilar (These are actually recomended by Aguilar to be run at 18 volts, even though they will work at 9) and All 3 versions (Early voltage doubled, later non-trim pot and trim- potted) of the Tone Pump.

The increased headroom in the trim potted version was very obvious. Not as much so in the non-trim potted version but it did operate fine.

The early voltage doubled version did not work well. I did not know it had the internal voltage doubler when I first employed it so I guess I pumped it up to a virtual 36 volts :eek:.
It didn't like it. Didn't burn out, but it was noisy and crackled badly (and loudly).

These voltage doubled Tone Pumps were only used extremely early in it's history so most of you (all of you post trim pot version debut) should be fine at 18 volts.

At first glance, I thought it was a Forte but it has the 18V USA circuit and the EMG Humbucker pickups in it plus the gold bridge.
