Mike's tone does sound pretty darn good! I'm gonna try out ampeg stuff one more time and give it another shot. I'm gonna sell my rig soon. I'm wanting a change in amps. I'm looking at Trace, Ampeg, and maybe Eden. Time to make a trip to GC!

Somewhat OT:

I know I should probably be asking this in the amps section but since so many of you have been showing the Ampeg love I figured I'd ask.

I've been a long time Eden user and while I like the amp, I think I'm getting tired of the solid state sound. I'm not very knowledgeable about the Ampeg line, so I'm curious as to what rig would be best for me. I'd love to still have a rackmount bass head if possible, but I wasn't sure if any of the SVT Pro rack heads match the sound of something like an SVT-CL.

Also, I see many have the 810 cab. I think that might be a bit much for me. I've been considering the 610HLF. What heads would that be a good match for?

I'd say if you want to go with the CL sound, you may want an all tube amp so for versatility, you could go with an SVT-2 pro, or for power and tone you can go with a tube pre-amp and SS power amp which is what I have in the SVT 4 pro.

As far as the cab goes, the 610HLF is monstrous in itself. That is by no means a compromise.
To borrow a quote from Patrick, the 610 is a 9 out of 10 sound, the 810 is a 12 out of 10 sound

I tried out an svt 4 pro once with 8x10 in GC and wasn't too into it. I didn't have my pedalboard though so I'm going to take with me next time. It has my di on it. I wanna get the full effect when I try it out again. I'm leaning towards an svt 4 pro & 8x10 though I think if I go ampeg. I need a big loud rig for the gigs we do
I wanna run over my guitarists like a bulldozer with my bass tone

Not digging the Goliath Sr. anymore?

While I do agree with the Spector/Ampeg sound, I can't help but notice that there is something else that seems to be going on with Mike's sound. I looked up his rig and he seems to use a Tech21 SansAmp so I am wondering if that is altering his tone at all? There is still some grit there when he uses that silverburst bass which is what led me to think that.

that's the exact rig I played at GC and wasn't impressed... I wonder if they just don't hook it up right..

I have played a SVT 810 with crown power amp and a Sansamp pre setup and it was killer. 1300 watts of bliss.

Interesting that you didn't like the 4 pro and 810, that's my exact setup and in the room where we jam, the overall room sound is pretty crap and I still love the tone I get from the Ampeg however, it did take me a while to set the EQ properly to respond to the crappy room (room has a LOT of buzzing...windows, doors etc and the acoustics are very crappy).

For the type of music that you play and the attack you have on your Spector, I think it's the perfect combo!
I am no authority on amps and sound by any means, but after trying 4 amps out, there's something about the Ampegs, just as there is that 'something' about the Spectors

Man, you guys had to mention Ampeg didn't you? They sure have some great deals on used Ampeg gear at GC so now it has me thinking. I had always been looking at brand new stuff by them and figured there was no way I could afford it but the used stuff is really dirt cheap in some locations.

I think I pretty much have my tax return spent but haven't even done my taxes yet My biggest dilemma is which Spector to buy when I get the money for it since my mind keeps changing every day. Oh the horror, LOL.

There is a LOT of tweaking involved with the 4 pro!
First and foremost, make sure it's Mono Bridged. There's also a little button in the back that would tell the amp to spit out mono not stereo...that's also important or else you won't get the full power of it.
Unless...they have it set up so the 810 is split into 2 channels (which is one of the cool things you can do and I think BASSGIANT's style is apt for this) one clean, one dirty so you're driving 2x410 in different channels.

Plus...GC is bad joojoo.

OK... My new Spector is en route to me (Euro 5LX in Poplar Burl) purchased on Ebay, and I only just noticed they don't have intonation screws on the bridge. What's up with that?

First off...CONGRATS!!!!!
If I am not mistaken (and I may be) intonation screws are available on the newer bridge models only.
But you can purchase one from the website.

I would agree with you but the NS-2 is missing a string And yes, an NS-5XL is on my short list of possibilities but there are a few others like the Forte 5 and USA bolt-on 5 that keep getting me thinking. Those are the 3 I am down to and deciding on.

I never was a 5 string guy until playing that blue Euro 5LX that I have and now it seems like I can't play without that B string. I know it's not for everyone but I was playing along to some old Black Sabbath songs last night that are tuned down to C# and playing it on the 5 string was great and didn't require me to change tuning.

Just to describe the "thunder" of the Spector B string since that is what I refer to it as. I bought a Line6 Bass Pod XT to mess around with and cannot get the thing to not clip when using the B string unless I add some compression into it. I am still messing with the thing but so far, that is the only way I can get it to not clip. I admit, I bought this Pod because Alex Webster mentioned he recorded the new Blotted Science CD with just that and his Spector bass

I was the exact opposite, I had a 5 string, wasn't for me, had to go back to 4 string.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Spector. You will definitely be happy with your purchase and Seventhframe is correct, you can order a bridge with intonation screws from the Spector site.

This is something they introduced very recently so the basses that are over a year old will not have them. You could always sell the current bridge you have in it since there are definitely people on here that prefer them without the intonation screws.

Congrats!!! there are two "set" screws on the sides of the bridge. you just loosen and move the saddles by hand. I have found I actually prefer this to standard intonation screws. Its all personal preferance

I know where you are coming from. I tried out a Rex5 when I bought my cab and that low B was heavenly.

BTW anyone looking to buy a REX: that bass played fantastic. it just felt good, even not being an NS body. I wouldn't hesitate on buying one of those if a good deal came up.

Im pretty sure the Euro and Rebop use the same bridge. Its the Euro vs American bridges you gotta watch out for.
