SPECTOR® Club - Part 27

I have a Rebop4 with the stock EMG 35 HZ pickups. I've searched for pickup height info and haven't found it. With the active EMG pickups, the suggestion is to set the pickups as close to the strings as possible. This is alright to do since the actives don't give off much magnetism. But what about the passive HZ pickups?

Actually I have my active EMGs 1/2 way between the strings and the body of the guitar. I find that if they are any higher they start getting in the way of my playing when I play finger-style.

It was my understanding that passives needed to be closer to the strings because they didn't have the more sensitive vibration pickup ability that powered pickups do. So when I've had basses with passive pups I've always put the pups a little closer to the strings to get the best signal.

I've got the pups pretty deep into my B.O.B. and it sounds amazing. Because of the way the neck and body fit together, being a bolt-on neck and a more traditional jazz style body, the relatively low sitting Hipshop bridge allows for a really low string height. And with this bass much more than the NS-Body basses the pups seem to be at just the right place to annoy me if they're not recessed (or sitting low).

Don't know... I haven't owned a passive pups Spector in two years. So I'm only relaying what I used to do. At this point anything I got that was passive I'd probably convert over to actives, just because I'm so used to the sound of them now.

On my legend I have passive pups. The Spector setup guide says to set the pups to within a credit card thickness below the strings. This is what I start out with then back them down lower until the strings are not hitting the pups. It depends on how aggressive your playing style is. The legend 4 sounds great with them closer!
I had a ReBop 5 DLX that I setup the pups the same way. Had to back down the volume afterwards! Haha
 

Thanks! And let me preface this by saying that I'm am no wiring guru. I'm just a firefighter that's pulled a few people out of buildings, cut more than I can count out of cars but this stuff scares me.:help:

Patrick was kind enough to supply me with the wiring diagram and some good pics.

The diagram calls for each pickup's hot and ground to go to their respective poles.....cool. One wire is white and the other wire is red. These both come from each pickup. The white wire is about 3 times as large as the red. Now these smaller red wires running from each pickup are joined together in a three way that goes to the battery and the red wire to the ODP-2. Do I snip these apart?

The white wires, being larger also, are they going to be harder to insert in the poles and slide the plastic cover over? Actually I'm not really sure how those bad boys work either....never ran across them.

So the diagram shows each pickup with a hot and a ground and 2 red wires both going to the same pole for 8 wires total. Where are all these wires coming from? Best of my count is 3 for the new jack, 2 from each pickup for a total of 7.

As far as the wires coming off the new jack (blue, greg and orange), I'm good there. It's just those red wires are kicking my butt.

Man, I wish this thing was on fire....maybe then I'd know what to do.

Good googlymoogly how loud do you all play? I have the poople 9.0 with the preamp gain and volume at noon and the master at roughly 9 o'clock. Any louder and I start getting the stink eye to turn it the phuck down. That's with a four ohmn NV215

the larger white wire should have a braided ground wire around the lead, if there is ,u want to carefully unbraid the exposed ground wire making sure no wires touch the lead wire.after that just twist the ground wire like ur tining it and simply wire that to ground ,wherever it needs to go.

The black knobs go out the outside of the bass, that's about all the help I can give...
 
Sam has been MIA ever since I lent him my Dremel over the weekend :) I can only imagine what is going on at his house now, LOL.

I decided to try an use the Dremel to clear out my arteries.... blood flying everywhere....lol :eek: :hiding: Joking ofcourse.

I just spoke with Husky,
His Forte has the grounding braids of of the EMG wires both soldered onto the blend pot so he will need to run thiner black grounding jumps to the ground posts on the Haz.

I gave him some tips on what to do which he is going to give it a try.
