File under "Things I wish I did 20 years ago":

Two weeks ago I added my ring finger to my finger style; trying to develop the three-finger gallop. I have always been able to play really fast with two fingers, but there's always FASTER!
Is this a direct influence of watching/listening to Alex Webster? Undoubtedly.
Plus, after a couple of 8-minute-long tunes, my hand is ACHING!
This isn't gonna be easy; the ring finger is the Billy Carter of the hand. If you have never tried it, put your hand flat on a surface, then lift each finger, one at a time.
Yeah, right?

Never had any problems adding the ring for gallop parts. It felt kinda natural to me. I don't use it during normal fingerstyle playing though. Still a pick guy though :)

i use pick, 2 finger, and 3 finger. just depends on the song. iron maiden is easy 3 finger all the way through. most of their stuff is gallop n e way. lol. theres one song we play that really suprised me i can use just my fingers. at first i thought no way, but it came easy for me. :hiding:

I play em all with a pick lol, unless I'm tapping / chord forming or slapping. I like to be able to play everything with fingers as well as a pick though. More for myself than any other reason.

very true. when i started, i started with a pick, which felt more natural for me. it wasnt years later that i started using the fingers. i have some trouble with the fast stuff because i use 3 fingers and have to get that timing right. but im getting better at it ;) slowly but surely

Lol I started the opposite, played with fingers first, but found there were songs that just sounded tighter with a pick. There were some that were real tough to play right with fingers, so I just stuck with a pick. I was into a lot of megadeth at the time , and I remember "parasite" from Exodus was next to impossible with fingers. Lol. My fingers always sounded different from one another too which I didn't like lol

lol. yeah megadeth is definitely pick required. theres a video of dave ellefson playing holy wars at a sam ash clinic and i was like "wow. he plays a lot more stuff in that song that i never heard" lol which is the case with most metal. :ninja: here.

Yeah he's always pretty busy. One of my favorite bassists. Got to meet him in Vegas. And got to play 3 songs with Marty too :) you can be pretty good and play his stuff with a pick, to play most of his lines with fingers though there's a whole other level you need to be on. Try "chosen ones" or " looking down the cross" with fingers lol. Yeah, good luck with that lol.

oh man is he ever underrated. such a phenomenal player. that's awesome meeting him and the sit with marty. yeah i dont know about those 2 songs with fingers.:eek: probably not going to happen anytime soon.

I do it forwards and backwards. *GIGGITY* ...anyway, It took a while to feel natural. I tapped my fingers slowly on my knee or anything else I could find to get the feel and pattern down...especially if I wasn't near a bass!

Typically, I use ring, middle, index in that order!

*EDIT* I also listen to a lot of Primus and Rush! Claypool and Geddy use that technique all the time so that also helped a lot!

I'm able to do the ring-middle-index gallop at a moderate speed - I mimic the guitar riff to Barracuda - otherwise it's middle-index for me - which I do for the Trooper - but I'm not able to finish the song - need to work on my endurance, lol!

Ha ha! I read somewhere that he does a 'reverse' - I guess it doesn't really matter which finger you start with when using two - I thought Steve Harris used two fingers, I'll have to find out where I read that he uses the 3 finger reverse gallop. :/

Edit: nevermind, he uses two
