Two weeks ago I added my ring finger to my finger style; trying to develop the three-finger gallop. I have always been able to play really fast with two fingers, but there's always FASTER!
Is this a direct influence of watching/listening to Alex Webster? Undoubtedly.
Plus, after a couple of 8-minute-long tunes, my hand is ACHING!
This isn't gonna be easy; the ring finger is the Billy Carter of the hand. If you have never tried it, put your hand flat on a surface, then lift each finger, one at a time.
Yeah, right?

3 finger playing is great!! I got the inspiration for that from Robert Trujillo and Billy Sheehan. Though I love Trujillo's tone...I REALLY don't like Sheehan's!!! But he KILLS it with the 3 finger technique!!

When you use the three finger gallop, do you do ring finger, middle finger, then index finger? Apparently Steve Harris does the opposite - and I can't make my fingers obey! LOL

Steve Harris uses two fingers only. The galloping is Ring -->Middle -->Index --->Ring.

What makes Steve Harris' gallop so amazing is he only uses two fingers....index and middle.

All his bandmates say he dominates the tickle fights.

That's what I have always done - Iron Maiden and Primus songs. I learned a lot of cool techniques watching Les Claypool, but I never saw the need to add the ring finger. I always had to do things the hard way!

i use pick, 2 finger, and 3 finger. just depends on the song. iron maiden is easy 3 finger all the way through. most of their stuff is gallop n e way. lol. theres one song we play that really suprised me i can use just my fingers. at first i thought no way, but it came easy for me.

I may be a little late to the conversation but here's how I play fast... I use one finger.

I just move it up and down like a pick.

That's how I learned to play stuff like YYZ, The Trooper, and other really fast songs. I can play with 2 or 3 fingers and I sometimes do if I get lazy but for me playing with just one finger is fastest and gives me the most consistent sound (I'm horrible with an actual pick).

I've heard Geddy Lee does something like this too.

I played it...the 3 piece maple on the neck is separating on the back...not worth waht they are asking for it...

then theyre advertising "in very good condition". that's not very good condition with the neck seperating. someone needs to call this guy out.

if someone could talk down the seller it would be a good buy. Easy fix for a trained Luthier. My guy has done plenty of repairs like that

Awesome man!!!! I'm still trying to decide on the TP or 9 volt circuit for my CR4FM. I have both in other Spectors.....decisions, decisions.

I thought about it....I have actually played it and it is not bad...that separation just sucks though!

I've heard Geddy Lee does something like this too.

As someone who has totally STUDIED Geddy's technique, he definitely employs the "one finger pick trick" at times.
