Bass players make the best producers/mixers.

there are alot of new bands that you hear on the radio and the bass is plenty audible. and thats a good thing. listening to some older stuff i like, im like, man if they brought the bass up a little more, it would definitely sound better.

the first 4 metallica albums. hahaha. i found the isolated bass tracks on youtube and played them with the studio version on itunes and it totally kicked ass!

Nothing like getting the final master back of an album and hearing your bass completely disappear. Ugh. Can't even tell what I played much less that it was a Spector.

And this was from a "high end" European mastering house that's done a lot of big records in the prog metal genre. Meanwhile it's THIS ****ING LOUD compared to other records.

So I guess it's going to be a little longer before my band's record comes out because there's no way I'm letting it go out this way - if it does they're going to need a new bassist LOL.

Anyone else have problems with getting their bass sound represented well on an album? I'm not looking for it to be out front like Geddy or something - fairly audible would be nice.

Bunk that plain ass sucks.....

Nothing worse than putting your blood, sweat & tears into a project and having your tone destroyed at the finish line. Lets raise the bar on expectations of bass in the mix. "Fairly audible" is still not good enough. But like most here have said, been there, done that.......Good luck with getting it done again at a different place, you deserve a better product at the end compared to what you got.

No joke, they are amazing instruments. Really don't see myself playing another bass for a very long time. Maybe upgrade to a US model when I get the coin. The Euro is definitely better than any other bass I've played in that particular price range.

Wasn't it Metallica's producer that played bass on the horrid "St. Anger" album, using the Spector NS-2 that belonged to the late bass player of Loverboy?

Yes. Bob Rock, Scott Smith.
It's the Spector you see Smith using in the old Loverboy videos.

No joke, they are amazing instruments. Really don't see myself playing another bass for a very long time. Maybe upgrade to a US model when I get the coin. The Euro is definitely better than any other bass I've played in that particular price range.

No joke, I've been a Fender lover since my first P-bass at 14. I'd trade it AND my American Standard Precision V for a Euro 5 to go with my Rebop.

Damn I think that video just convinced me to put the 40P5 and 40J in my NS-5XL again.

Trust me I'd love to raise the bar. Problem is a couple of the other band members hear no problem with it. It's insulting really. When I listen to the mixes I always have comments about how to make ALL the instruments sound good. Apparently I'm the only one listening for the bass.

The sad thing is this will probably be the end of my involvement with the project. I know they are not likely to back up enough in the process to get the bottom end sounding better, and there's simply no way I'm going to put any more time or money into supporting an album I am not audible on. Rather than make them replace the bass tracks, I'd probably just let them buy my performance rights and leave it at that. What a headache.
