I know this is a long-shot but if anyone can point me in the direction of some of these Schaller M4s with the downwards screw mounts, in black, that'd be awesome. I really don't want to have to drill out the headstock on my new-to-me Euro4.

+1 On this question. I can either a) drill the headstock for a set of Gotohs I have, or b) Drill another screw hole for the Schallers that have the side mounting screw.

Anyone have a line on the schallers with the mounting screw on the bottom?

I had a Legend 4 when I was at the height of my playing in college. I was playing 3-4 nights a week plus rehearsals in several different ensembles (marching band, salsa, steel drum, jazz)! It was a fantastic bass and super light weight!!!! I wish I hadn't sold mine.

I want to get my first fretless and I'm looking at getting a Legend fretless 4. Played the fretted version and it was a solid Bass for the $$$. For the price you cant beat em. I was looking at the Spectorcore but I think the Legend might suit my needs better and I can always slap a EMG 35p & 35J in it with a Tone-Pump

I am a huge fan of the trimpot tonepumps. What style do you play these days? I only use TPs in my basses at the moment. It is the best value on a preamp in my opinion.

Well, sad to say I'm not currently with a band. Moved away the band I was playing with which was contemp worship (Hillsong United feel). I like to play along with stuff atm. I love practicing with DMB so Stefan Lessard's tone and style, not that I'm at that level atm.

Yeah the Legend is a great buy...especially if you can snag one with a PJ setup!

I am geeking on the fretless sound right now too! I would also recommend finding an NS-2A and having it converted as they are also a great bang for the buck!

If it works for them, then I say go for it! They are great basses. Also, some just prefer BO vs neck thru.

Truth. Even though I finally picked up a euro, my legends aren't going anywhere for the moment. Even as 'budget' instruments, the legends are excellent sounding, and they play very well once set up. My all maple legend 5 replaced my former modulus as my main bass, because it sounded that good to my ears. This is all just IMO of course.

Got my Spector Comfort strap from Jaymi!!

sadly I think I have an odd issue with it...

The strap is in perfect condition... how ever like the rest of my straps...

its too long... I said it....

I just lost all metal credit


However with my new NS6XL I find myself wearing it higher and I will need to continue my search for another strap

Make it shorter by either, fold the extra length of strap and sew it up in place or take a needle/thread and tack up the extra length. I have the opposite problem, I needed mine longer. So my wife ripped out the extra hem and re-sewed it so it fits perfect now.

Well, I couldn't fight it any longer, it's a NBD! ... I've been looking a long time for just the right Spector. Something that's a clear departure from my other Spectors (dual humbucker/BT layout in my Rex5 and PJ/tonepump in my 4LX). I really like how each of them are voiced but I wanted to add a final one to the mix with the sound that only a Jazz layout can get. After trying and looking at (read that as drooling over) a number of basses I found what I hoped was the perfect fit. A new Woodstock USA NS2 Special Edition Walnut body burl top bolt on with Jazz pickups and an OBP-3 preamp. It just arrived via UPS today and all I can say is, I don't think I could have made a better choice for what I was looking for. This thing just sings so sweet and was perfect right out of the box. Here she is, #10 out of 14 made...

WOWZERS! That is some sweetness! I like how the woodgrain comes together in the center of the body. Way cool! Congratulations!

Here's a question that pops into my head from time-to-time.
Some of Spector's endorsing artists choose to play Legends or Performers.
Some of these people are big names, or are touring all over the world (Red Jane, the dude from Staind, etc).
What would drive an artist to use an "inferior" instrument when they have options like the Euro or USAs available to them?

The Legend and Performers are not inferior by no means. I had a legend 4 for 3 years, great sound. The world touring endorsed artist might be looking at their less expensive so they can buy more, if they get damaged or stolen easy to replace, or it works for them, so why change.

im not that good at sewing lol my needle and thread dont go pass patches on a jacket.

i might keep it around for other basses but for now im going to look for a mono strap or Levy ergonomic

That's why I put it in quotes. I'm definitely a fan of the Legends, but I'd play a Euro or US if I was given a budget that allowed for 1 or 2.

I've got the stock ones on now but was thinking of Sunbeams for a really deep dive or possibly Elixer Nanos for a fast run and silky smooth slides. Any recommendations out there?

I'll try some D'Addario Prosteels(havent tried them yet) and then possibly some DR Black Beauties(also, havent tried them yet) then I might either just get some Spector strings again(dont mind them at all) or continue the hunt haha

I have thought about getting a legend x myself. Endorsing artists still pay for basses, and yes cost of replacement definitly weighs in on the decision. The legends are still a $700 bass. I have played one and I was impressed

The Schaller M4s were standard on Spectors for many years. At some point, they switched to M4 2000 tuners. I don't know when, but all the Kramer era Spectors I've seen have M4s. All the Euro I've seen have the M4 2000s. Hey Worshiprocker, what does your CRFMs have on them?

We need to find a source in the U.S. for Schaller M4 2000 tuners because this issue comes up a lot in our club. I bet PJ would know where to get some, because he is part owner in the company that uses those tuners. You should email him. Maybe we could talk him in carrying those tuners in the spector store.

Actually the link you posted is exactly what PJ mentioned to me when I inquired about this a few months back. The M4 2000 does have the screw to the bottom but you notice the tuner itself is a different shape.

It seems the Czech Shop uses some type of OEM combo version of the M4 2000 with the tuner of the M4.

At that point even PJ was stumped on this. I am going to mention this again to him. It would great if the Spector Store can carry these since this does seem to be a common issue that has been coming up.

Hey, just wanted to let you know I finally got some time to listen to some of your sound clips. Wow, fantastic! I'm constantly amazed at the talent on this website. You and your band could easily play on stage along side Alice-n-Chains or other similar bands and be perfectly calibrated with what the audience expects from a professional high dollar touring band. Get a good promoter, you guys are darn good, I'll be buying your music and I'm sure many others will also. If you ever run thru the Cincinnati Ohio or Ventura California area let me know, I'll be there!

As for the legend basses, not bad at all. I still think one of the best deals in the Spector line up (besides the NS2A) is the Professional Series Rex4 and 5. They can be had for around $500 used and just scream. It's the first bass that made me jump for the volume control on my SVT-VR to crank it down before I blew out the speakers on my Bergantino cab.

I'm a huge Black Beauties fan, use then on my Stingrays with great results, but wasn't too fond of the tone on my Euro 4LX P/J non-trim tone pump. Seemed too mid focused and honky. Also tried Cobalts on the 4LX and wasn't impressed at all, way too much finger and fret noise. Took those off within 10 minutes of putting them on. I ended up with Elixer Nano's on the 4LX and swear by them. Silky smooth, plenty of sizzle if needed and plenty of bottom end if needed all while providing an ultra smooth and really fast and quiet string - almost zero fret noise, and did I mention fast, fast, fast. I can do some transitions on these strings that I just can't pull off with others. Largely due to my lack of skill but partly due to how forgiving the Elixers are. If you haven't tried them it's worth it, I'd put them ahead of the Black Beauties on a Spector bass.

It's funny you mention that, Sam. I was thinking the same exact thing after taking a closer look at the tuners on the Euro tonight. If the store is going to sell bridges and preamps, it would make sense that they'd also carry the matching tuning machines. I have been emailing back/forth with the guys in Germany at Schaller to see if I can get some more clarity on this. (Maybe it would help to put a note over to someone in the Czech shop to see if they can shed some light on this.)

Interestingly, I took a closer look at my Forte's machines tonight as well and they also have the downward screws, though they are unmarked so I'm not sure who actually makes them.
