Happy Friday, fellas!

A few questions for you all.

1) If you were to replace the HZs in a Rebop, which EMG pups would you get?
2) Who's played a SpectorCore fretless, what are your thoughts, and what is a good price to pay for one? I got a fretless bug out of nowhere today.

And lastly, Donny, tear it up tonight! Hopefully some of my friends out there saw my message and will be able to make it.

I have the 40P/40DC in my Rebop and love it. I had a 40J in the bridge, but it didn't add anything. Just the normal "playing in the bathroom with the door shut" sound. I play metal so I do like more output without getting clanky, which is why the 40p is in the neck. Dual DC's were really bright and boomy. This is with the Spector 18v, not sure how it would sound with the TP. I do have a brand new 40J if you decided to go that route it was just not for me.

I'd say DCs or a 35P & 35J (40P5 & 40J if you have a ReBop5 like me). I'm personally going with the 40P5 & 40J to get closer to the NS-2 sound.

Yes, it's a 5-String and I'd like to try and stick with the trimpot tonepump that's in it to keep costs down.

Your comment about the NS-2 sound is very helpful as that is where I'd like to go with it. The 40P5 and 40J is they way to do it then?

The 40DC, as Fat240 pointed out, is a good bridge option, too.
I, personally, liked the sound of the 40J, and it's closer to what an NS-2 would have with its P/J combo.

Part of me wants to check out the Rebop MM but instead of the Tonepump, I would install that Nordstrand 2 band Music Man pre. Yeah, I know it's blasphemy but I love the tone on those old pre Ernie Ball Music Man basses and think it would sound great in the Rebop MM.

These are just some of the insane ideas I kick around in my head. Of course, I have no money so it's not like I can even do it but it's fun to wish

However what I discovered, much to my delight, was that the MM sound is in there, or close enough really. It would pass the blind taste test. The great news is, there are more tones available. It's not a one or two trick pony. I realize that I'm in the honeymoon faze, but this bass is bringing some real Spector innovation. This is not your father's ReBop, this is something new. John, your extra large mitts would really appreciate the neck. However, small hands Ho is not hating on it, because of the shape. Basically feels like an old P bass neck. I want you guys to try this thing out and play it at real stage volumes. Below you see a huge problem. I can not afford to keep both. But they look like they belong together. What a dilemma!

can you afford to keep both for a couple of months at least and give them both a thorough workout? MM's are a lot of fun but they always leave me needing something more in a loud rock setting. your forte is just too cool.

It's all what you like, you just have to try different options yourself. The DC was able to get me a better cut thru the mix and picks up the harmonics really good where the J wouldn't. I favor the P on my NS2's and blended together with the J is a good tone. On the Rebop 5 the P picks up the meat and the DC clairfies it. Especially with the low B and sometimes tuning to G I didn't want it to be muddy.

Ah to have such dilemmas . The answer is simple. Sell one to me, haha. I'm not picky. I'd gladly accept either into my stable.

Sooo I'm eagerly awaiting my spector euro in matte plum and figure, why not go trawling for bass porn to find some pics of that plum stain in a satin state (cause most pics show the gloss).. and i found a japanese site with veryyyy nice pics of the matte finish that proudly exclaims..

I've got a SpectorCore 5 fretless in Green/Black (I think it's officially called 'teal', but it's darker than that) that I picked up recently. Haven't played it much (I've got a Clement that I've been spending time with lately), but it's not a bad bass - if I didn't have other fretless options, I'd play it more.

There's the two pickup options, w/ the EMG-HZ in front and the Fishman piezo in the rear. I prefer the rear pickup (more of a unique voicing), but the nice thing is that you get two distinct tones out of the instrument (I prefer one or the other, not so much of a blend). You can get a decent 'hollowbody' tone out of the piezo, but it would sound better in that way if it were not fretless, IMO. 'Mwah' factor is about average - it's there, but hey - it's a passive bass, right?

It's a 35" scale, but isn't as noticeable that way as, say, my Forte5 - that, I know it's a 35", every time I touch it.

Anyway, I see you're in IL - I'm in NW Lake Co, near the WI border. If you're interested in checking it out (and I'd be willing to sell / trade if you like it), send me a PM. I paid $400 for mine, and that's what they seem to go for, used. New, you can get them for $850-ish (? - not sure if there's a price increase for 2013)

I'm reading waaay too much about retopping & finishing my P-bass to look like a Coda DLX. Found a great place for wood & most people think it won't be too hard, if I use a 1/4" thick figured top.

This got me thinking about my next project. My NS-2000/5 is definitely a keeper, until I can afford a Euro5LX or a US. My only beef is the heel of the neck. It's a neckthru, but the heel looks like a set neck.

Does anyone know how much of the heel I could take off without compromising the structural integrity? Ideally, I'd like to take it down to the same level as the body contours (like the Euros & US neckthru of today).

Now I'm understanding the differences between these pups. Thanks again for the feedback. Now I just need to decide if I want to upgrade the Rebop or sell it and get an LX already set-up with something I want.

Put the US 9v PJ config into a Precision style bass or even a current Coda (Jazz) body..... That's what I'm talking about!

A Spector MIA PJ5 Coda.... With a great flamed/spalted maple top and a black or matching headstock? Where do I send the $$$.
