Well, looks like that old Brooklyn NS-2 from ebay is coming my way!

I'm going to restore it with the period correct Dimarzio P/J pickups, Active/passive and Phase switch and hopefully a US 9V. Cosmetically I'll keep it as is and put some more gig miles on it.

Cool thing is that seeing as though the pickups and pre won't be original to the bass, I can do some experimenting. The US 9v isn't always available so I may try it out with an Aguilar pre and maybe even a tone pump at some point. I'll try the Dimarzio's but I can always toss in some EMG's for that kind of tone.

Should be fun!

Both of my tube-quilt basses, The Black Pearl and The Blue Dream, have pronounced wave patterns running 90 degrees from the "tubes" or "waves" of the quilt.

Which makes them even more beautiful when you get close to them and inspect them.

The tube quilt on my NS-4 has the same distinct grain pattern. So beautiful when seen in person.....

Yeah I see... Thanks guys. Really jonesing for this bass but have to wait several more months though. I'll keep myself busy with the NS4CRFM I got from Jim, plus messing with the 18v mod I've done on both it and my Euro.

Patrick, I like your approach of having several Spectors but each having it's own voice. That's my take on having multiple Spectors. Why have one if it's just going to sit. Unless you're Todd and collect them like stamps! LOL (jk Todd, I'm jealous.) Though I'm sure he plays his favs regularly.

Yeah. I'm curious on how different this one will feel from my old Kramer and late Brooklyn Spectors. Its probably going to sound different with the Dimarzios and considering that it has the Walnut body instead of Maple.

I dig that woodworker/hippy vibe it has going on though.

US9V -VS- OBP...

I can only speak of the US9V and the OBP-2. Both sound great. I had the OBP-2 for about a year or more in my Forte and I managed to get some amazing tones from it be it clean or dirty.
With my US9V both in the NS-2 and my Forte while recording, I didn't have much trouble getting the clean sound I wanted. When we did a couple of songs in the studio, I mixed my signal between a DI box and 2 410 cabs.

In the end, when you have the bass mixed with the entire song, I would dare say that it would extremely hard to notice any (if at all) differences between one circuit or the other.

Now, when I record at home, direct from my bass into Cubase, the recordings I have of my Forte with the OBP-2 and the US9V by comparison, for the life of me are again, difficult to tell because each song I end up mixing it a certain was which may be different from another song I do with another bass...there are many variables to it.

I also find this to likely be the most important factor: Fingers. Fingers shape a LOT of your tone (if not most of it...but that's just my opinion).

So my $0.2 here, if you want to classic NS-2, of course, US9V. If you want to explore other areas, OBP. I Like Patricks analogy of the toolbox.
I hope this rambling makes sense :P

Should rock. That's the plan for my plum CRFM too.

I predict the US9V preamps will be sold out within minutes of the moment they become available. I just hope I'm lucky enough to grab one before they're gone for another stretch...
