hey guys. i posted a trade for my emg 35 dc's for a 35 p and 35 j. if there's any interest. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f129/f-t-emg-35-dcs-1003079/ if anyone knows somebody who's interested in a trade, send them my way.
Will do, you should try the P with the DC and then the P with the J and compare the two combinations. The P/DC is a pretty sweet combo.
p in the neck and dc in bridge? im not crazy about the dc in the bridge. just my opinion. i want to get the p/j config as much as possible
That sound amazing and looking forward to seeing the finished bass. I hope Stewart will send you a picture of the burl wood before finish...love to see it.
In some states the brass knuckles are illegal and if you took it on a gig...and don't try taking it on a commercial jet.

Yeah, I am not a DC fan at all either, but I do like that combo with the soap bar pickups and in my 5 string it's my goto combo. For some reason the 35 and 40 J pickups were lacking the output I expected and different from the J's in the NS-2's. Not sure if anyone else has experience that, I think ol Jhon D and Bunk can weigh in on the topic?
I keep this Diagram for reference, though I don't know if the MM has the positive - neg reverse??? Would be cool to know. I do know that if they are installed backwards it greatly effects the output.

I just flipped the wires around and now its all perfect, thank you Basstovsky and Fat240 so much for the help!
So now the wiring is 100% complete!
And I got it up and running, ready to play! The original knobs are back on there and I feel like I'm back in Brooklyn in the late 70's/early 80's.
The preamp and pickups weren't the only thing I did to this bass. While it may be silly, I even replaced the strap buttons, which were new chrome Schallers, with new gold Schallers. The gold was too shiny, so I reliced them. Its a small detail, but as we all know the devil is in the details! lol

Right on!! Glad it worked, now we know the pickup config is pretty much the same for that config of preamp. A small detail I'm sure has stumped many. Looks great in all its vintage MOJO!

I have some more head to head work to do, but so far it seems like the 40J in my 5XL with the 9v preamp sounds better than when I had the same pickup in the bridge position with the 18v in my other 5XL. Right now that 5XL is setup P/DC which sounded better for that bass.
Yeah, I have the P/DC combo in my NS-4 and love the combination. This thing will punch you in the chest if you let it so I actually had to lower the pickups a bit since the animals in my house would start to run when I would play this bass, lol. The combination of those pickups and the 18V USA circuit really sound nice together but my dogs are definitely not a fan
I remember when Chris Loe had the bass, he tried the P/J combo and said the same exact thing about the J pickup lacking in output. His favorite combo on this NS-4 was the P/DC combo as well but his favorite was the P/J setup so he sold this NS-4 to fund the blue NS-2 he bought.

Kudos! I envy you this bass. It's a piece of history and you've done a great job of bringing it back to it's original glory as best you can. Beautiful.
