So, here is the question, the string groove on my E string saddle does not look large at all. As a mater of fact, it looks non existent. Do I need a tapered E string on my Spector??

You should be getting your strings from www.bassstringsonline.com

There are not a lot of nickel sets with tapered E strings, mainly it's the B string that is tapered. You may want to look into an exposed core string like SIT, GHS Progressives, or LaBella. But Jason at BSO can hook you up, and he gives TB users a discount!

I prefer the Prosteels - imho, they seem to last a bit longer, they feel more lively, and they sound fantastic on my NS-2 & Euro. I've been using them exclusively for 2+ years now.
I still run the nickel D'Addarios on my NS-4, as they seem to have a more balanced tone on that particular bass.

The string should rest in a natural spot without need to pull to the side, so go ahead and put non-tapered strings on. Unless tapered is your preference.

I'm very happy with the string manufacturer who makes the strings I put on my Rickenbackers, Circle K. They only do nickel so I'm not sure what is out there in stainless. Circle K does not make strings in a gauge that mirrors Spector, close enough but an order now means delivery in 3-5 days. I was hoping to swap them out after a quick trip to my local store. The DR's had no taper, I had the clerk check, and the D'Addario were sealed so I could not check. I believe Ernie Ball Slinkys have a tapered E but that would have meant a trip to GC and that was not in the cards today.

Since the saddles are not notched, thanks for that info, I suppose it does not matter about the taper, which opens up many more choices.

mmbongo, thanks for the tip about Bass Strings online. A discount is always a good thing!!

I have played active basses in the past but this thing has its own sound for sure. And the neck is so easy to play on. I was playing "a portrait of tracy" on it earlier and the dynamics and tonal variances are so much different than my fenders. I feel I have much more control over the sounds I can produce from my fingers. Amazing. The sound I am trying to produce with this bass is along the lines of godsmacks bassist. I just love the tone he gets. Anyway thanks for the tips! This is going to be a fun little project!

I had owned a Legend 4 Classic for 3 years. The ONLY thing that I changed on the Legend was swapping out the graphite string nut for a brass nut...WOW, what a tremendous difference! You'd thought it was a totally different bass! For $25.00, well worth it. :smug::bassist:
