You guys should consider the older MacroTech series from crown if you ever come across one. I'm not sure if they still make them, probably the best amps crown ever made. These are from when crown made amps for touring companies. Can be found used for a decent price.

Sure, they weigh a ton, but its electric bass. **** is supposed to be heavy.

I've been pretty old school about amps until now, there is actual heft to the sound, not unlike the heavy iron I used to lug around. That's the 2500, so there's enough power on one side at 8 ohms to reasonably run a bas cab.
To put it into perspective, the power amp only weighs as much or maybe a couple pounds more than the preamp.
Decent warranty and cheap if you wait for a sale.

We also had an old Crown for our PA and used it for years, we blew out one side of the amp so wound up using it for the monitors. The guys in that band decided to buy a set of new Peavey amps rather than fix the Crown...but...I loved that old amp, it did a great job.

Ok, I did the wiring on my non-trimpump into my P-bass. I noticed some discrepancies with the nonTrimpump vs the Trimpump as far as wiring goes. The Trimpump has an extra ground lead that goes to the jack.

I also noticed that, by the diagram, there are 3 leads going to the output jack, instead of 2. 1 from the battery, 1 hot from the pre, and a ground from the pre. They also seem to hook up to different places than I would expect of a normal jack wiring.

The white lead is the purple lead you see in the first photo. It was too short, so I had to extend it. The black lead on the bottom left is to a ground point. The black lead on top is attached to the battery.

Now...can someone tell me if I wired the jack right? The diagram for the TP shows the inner solder point being the ground, so that's where I put it. And the sleeve shows as being the hot out from the pre. It then shows the battery connecting to the ring, which I'm assuming is the part that sticks up and touches the tip of the jack, right? Do I need to reverse the ground & the pre-amp?

I'm asking because this seems to be backwards to how it was wired passively. The inner solder point was the hot from pickups before. :S
I haven't put it back together yet, as I have to route the body to fit the extra pot needed on the PG and I'm going to route the back to make a control cavity.

To use an active pre, you need a Stereo jack, the stock Mono jack in that passive bass is incorrect to use with the Tonepump, hence the extra wire issue.

The stereo jack is what allows the preamp to be turned on when a cable is inserted, the solid shaft of the cable (normal mono instrument cable) connects the stereo prong and ground ring together, completing the circuit to the battery, and turning it on, while not interfering with the separate tip connection for the output signal.

The way you have it wired to the jack will either not work, or the battery will constantly drain from the moment it is installed, hopefully it won't damage anything :eek:


I don't mean to sound like I;m criticsizing, just trying to help a brother out :D

Thanks! So, all I have to do is go get a stereo jack. :D I knew something didn't seem quite right. :)

The lack of ground from the TP to the jack shouldn't cause any issues, as long as the jack's grounded, right?

I imagine they are the standard emg size.... and boy do I want to try these out, must resist
