Spector Club - Part 13

When I say tapered I mean there is an exposed core or less wrapping where the string sits in the bridge saddle.

Yea, I don't care for D'Addario a ton anymore. I like nickel strings, so I think I'm gonna go with DR Low Riders if I go DR.

I just picked up a set of D'adds yesterday: nickel-wound EXL170-5, 45-130. The B string is not tapered, but I don't know about the 135's.

I'm a DR Sunbeam fan but the local music store doesn't carry DRs in 5-sets.

Oh, I have a question. Why no PJ pick up configured 5 string basses?
I asked this before...you can order them that way and with any config you want thru PJ.

I don't have a roster and knew that was wrong...:eyebrow:

It will be tight. I've been slowly widening my B slot on mine with sandpaper.

I put a set of Ernie Ball Coated Slinkies on my Rebop last night and ended up having to crimp the windings on the ball end a bit for it to slide in easily. But... I've also had to do that to other bridges on other basses, or route the holes in bridges to be larger.

Hey guys, if I go with a nontapered string will I have any problems fitting a .130 into the Spector bridge?

According to the Spector store on their web site, their B string is a .130 but the strings are listed as "stainless tapered steel." I am about to get new strings for my Euro 5 but I keep changing my mind since I don't want to run into any issues with a certain gauge not fitting.

I was going to just use DR's with a .125 but I believe the existing strings I have now are the original Spector ones. I wish there was an easy way to tell and this B string is pretty massive and feels tight. I was going to use Hi Beams but those aren't as tight so I was going to probably go with Lo Riders but I have those on another bass I have and even those seem to have less tension than these ones on my Euro 5.

A 130 non tapered B string on my euro5lx doesn't come close to fitting. I know some of the guys here don't have that problem, if you can call it that, fitting non tapered 130 Bs in theirs. But I do.
I posted some pics of my bridge back in club thread 11 I think. I'll see if I can find them and repost if you want. So I guess the answer to your question is maybe?

I remember seeing a euro5lx in the classifieds a while back where the owner had the same problem. He drilled part of the bridge to widen it so a non tapered B would fit. That might be a viable solution.

Mmmmm no. You've never seen me handle power tools have you.

Desides I have no problem with tapered strings.

Here's the pic of my bridge and a 130 Pro Steel B string. Not even close

looks like you need to file that puppy a bit.

pretty easy fix. Do it soon though before you fatigue the metal too much, you can see where the tension is starting to stretch the slot. that can stress the metal and cause cracks. Shouldn't take you more than 20-30 min being very careful. Get it done and run 135's if ya want lol :bassist:

I've got the same issue with a 135 Ernie Ball Power Slinky on my Rebop 5, also had the issue with a 130 Bass Central Elite. It's not exactly an issue though, just something you get used to, doesn't really change anything about the sound of the B string as far as I'm aware.

Oh and in terms of strings for fivers, I favour Ernie Ball Slinkies, excellent quality strings. If you're into steel roundwounds though I highly recommend Rotosound's 66 Swing Bass series. I used to use them regularly but have recently found I prefer the sound and feel of nickel.
