I know they don't get a lot a love here on TB but I love Elixers. They sound, to me, like nicely broken in rounds and they last forever. Though if you use a pick a lot they tend to get the fuzzies. And you can get them with a tapered B string from Juststrings.com. YMMV

I just wanted to say thanks for all the info everyone gave about strings. They are definitely something I never really paid much attention to but man you sure notice when you change them and your bass doesn't sound like it normally does.

Of course, I am only going on about 4 hours of sleep right now since I was up posting half the night but that is what Red Bull is for :)

Agreed. Don't use a pick and you'll be ok. The strings don't have that sharp high end zing new rounds do. I don't care for them though. Elixers are the only string that I've ever broken a B string on. The string came unwound...:eek::eek::eek:

Strings can make or break a bass. They affect the sound and the feel.

So I sent my truss rod cover off about a week ago to have it inlaid with Abalone, got it back yesterday, put it on this morning, looks awesome, the pics don't do it justice.

The problem is, these things aren't cheap :) We aren't like guitar players here that pay like $5 for a set of strings.

That looks great Chris. Did Spector do that or did a different company do it for you?

I have a '98 NS-4CR that i picked up last year. A very nice bass indeed, and I liked it much better after I put an OBP-3 into it.

After using D'Addario's and DR's for many years I recently discovered some alternates that I am very satisfied with:
Dunlop Nickels and SIT's (Silencers and Power Wound's).

What I really like about SIT's is they come in 50-105, which have become my favorite set gauges. I put a set of Power Wound Nickels on the Spector last week and, much to my chagrin, found the nut was originally cut for a much lighter set - it looked liked 40-100! I had my tech do the adjustment
and took the bass on a gig over the weekend. I have to say I was very impressed with the tone I got. I'll have to see how they last, but at $14 a set I find them tough to beat at this point. Time will tell.

I also now have the Silencers on several basses and I am very happy with the results. I now keep a stock of these handy. An excellent string for a great price IMO.

I think the Dunlop Nickels also sound really good too - I'm not too crazy about the steels though.

DR's are still excellent (my favorites are the Lo-Rider Nickel) but I'm finding some real bang for the buck in these others.

I tried Dunlops about a year ago....two sets in a row quickly went dead on me so I wrote em off. D'Addairio's seem to loose some of their zing pretty quick for me...not all of it, but some...but then they stay at that point for a while. It's been a long time since I've had Boomers, but I do like them on guitar.

Not the Pro Steels. They go dead on me real quick. At least for me they do

My favorite strings on a Spector bass are the DR Nickel Lo Riders. They have just the right amount of treble, deep & articulated bass, and a nice growl. My least favorite is anything from Ernie Ball. I tried a couple of different sets and they were both just a zingy, metallic, clanky treble mess.

Honorable mentions go to:

GHS Boomers - Tame on the top end, but still a decent string. They last a long time.

Dean Markley Nickel Steels - Good balanced sound, but they go dead very quickly.
