The Legend Custom has the same EMG HZ pups as the Rebop and a custom EMG-9v circuit made just for Spector which is really nice.

The Legend Classic has the TonePump Jr. (OK... no TonePump bashing please)... The difference between the Jr. and the regular TP is that the Jr. doesn't have the output trim and some of the boost that the TP has. But they are otherwise the same Circuit.

OK... I know some of you don't like the EMG SSD... but those were designed for Stuart by EMG from specs he gave them. It's what he thinks best fits that bass.

No need to do any electronics updates on either of the legends honestly. The Set-Neck Custom is on par with the Rebop in terms of circuit and pups.

Both are very respectable SP models to have and play. Lots of pros use both.

What are the usual criticisms of the EMG SSDs?:S I think those pickups are fantastic, at least on my Legend Classic anyway, so much more mid range punch than the HZs.

This bass has been out for about a year & a half now. I have yet to find any reviews or even feedback from anyone who's played one. I'm interested, but need to know a bit about it's sound & feel before spending almost $4000 for it.
I would hope to get long scale tonal performance out of this short scale for that price.
Does anyone know anything about this bass?

I have asked the same questions regarding a Forte 4. Much newer than a Shorty but a few have been sold. When no one active here has one it's a dead end. I hope you have better luck.

They sounded OK by themselves, but when compared to my Euro4 with premium EMG's and the same pre (I switched the Legend's pre before switching out the SSD's in the hopes of evening the tone between the basses) they just sounded dull and had much less output.

I also had a Rebop 5 Deluxe around this time. The TonePump EMG-HZ combo was much more comparible to the Euro4's setup. It had about the same output as the Euro4, but not quite as bright sounding (but actually a tad more "beef" at similar settings).

Bottom line, the EMG-SSD with Tone Pump (not the original "Jr.") still could not compete with the other two Spectors.

It's always bugged me since I got the spector about the strap buttons. I never trusted them. They always came off when I sat with my strap but were never a problem standing.


Just dropped my bass today.

Even though I've tried just about every bass under the sun, I'm a P-J-Ray guy all the way back. The NS-5 is such a different beast that my usual playbook doesn't seem to quite apply.

I first tried it with DR DDTs, which felt nice and played in tune all over the neck, but the basic sound was a little dark and if I boosted the highs I was getting some "click" in the mix that I didn't like. So I tried some pedulla nickels on it hoping I'd be able to get it brighter without being clicky ... those just plain sucked on it.

So I thought back about my favorite spector players and realized I had a set of Dean Markley Blue Steels laying around ... Now we're talkin! The B string is a little thuddy, but otherwise I am getting some good, mean, crushing tone with a pick. Slap sound is still a little sterile.

It also still doesn't quite get that classic NS-2 sound. From what I'm gathering from my searches, the difference is the DC pickups in the 5 string vs. the PJ in the NS-2. Has anyone here experimented with EMG 40P and 40J in an NS5? My searches have not turned up much because talkbass strips "NS-2" and "NS-4" from the search terms.

I've also got some DR Lo-Riders on the way to try out, see if they get me a little more growl while keeping that intense attack the markleys are giving me.

They just marry so well with Spectors.

Or just go cheap and when you go on a beer run pick up a pack of Grolsch, delicious beer and the red o-rings used to seal the really funky bottle tops are the PERFECT size to use as straplocks, just put them over the strap buttons and they hold that strap on tight. Have them on almost every bass I own and I can swing them over my head without falling off.

Lol. Not cause i'm broke, well I am, but because I'm 14. Don't think I can exactly go out and buy some of these beers. haha.

Being here on TB and getting to know you guys has greatly influenced some of the things I wanted to see on the site. So thanks for all the great feedback.

It's getting more new content every day. The new and improved TonePump tech stuff went up earlier today.

It'll look familiar.

I can tell you that around 20 or so have been made. The first couple were made specifically for Garry Tallent. The Tallent Signature Model is an all-black Shorty with no neck inlays. Sort of the Forte of the shorty line. But Garry loves them.

It is interesting to note that this is the only model where the strings are fed through the back to the bridge (due to the shortened scale), but Stuart has made a couple without the through-body string mounting. I guess someone requested some that way.

Talk to PJ Rubal. He can let you know if any dealers in your area have one. I absolutely can't blame you for not wanting to drop that sort of money on a bass you've never even held. Not to mention you'll have to wait 3-4 months while it's being made.

I will also state for the record... and it's my belief because I've got a very expensive NS-4 on the way and yes, I've played USA NS-2s before and know the neck profile but I've never touched a NS-4 with dual EMG DC's and the 18v circuit... and we're talking this is a $7,000 bass I've ordered...

Anyway on to my statement, I know the quality and the absolute attention to detail that goes into every USA model.

So I don't recommend anyone else make the plung without being sure, but I have and I promise you I'll have no buyer's remorse when my NS-4 arrives later this month.

It's a leap of faith. And I'm perfectly ok with the jump.
