Spector Club Pt. 3 (Insert Clever Title Here)

I also have a Korean-made Spector, and for many of them, the first 2 numbers indicate year of production.

If it has the usual curved body shape (looks flat in the picture, and not just because it's 2D), it could be the NS 2000/5 from 2001.

PJ/customer service would definitely help you with this, but that's my nearest guess from having been helped by them before. Good luck finding a definitive answer. :)

Trust me, when all is said and done I'll put up a large number of samples. I was actually extremely close to putting this project "to bed" this past Spring (i.e. I worked out how much the Better Half's "Long Weekend" Vacations w/ her Mom had been costing over the last several years, and showed her that the pickups & installation was about the same price ;) ) but came upon my beloved Taylor AB-2 ABG that has been one of my "dream basses" since around '01 that was priced far below it's worth before the Market died and purchased it... but the deal was that this was *my* Purchase for 2009, and the pups would be put off.

I have no regrets pushing it back for my Taylor, but would like to finish my Spector "project" (which I had in mind since I bought my first 5-string in 2007) simply for the sake of having it done at this point. I'm putting some awat every month, and with some luck I'll be able to combine that to be my GiftMass/Birthday Present (Athiest for the first, birthday right after Xmas so I'm used to "combined" large gifts for the second :) ).

Regarding the ToneDump Ultimate clips, they are indeed sonically *great* and offer a wide variety of usable tones. As I said, I've discovered that I'm generally a quality single coil guy - give me a set of Fralin or Aeros (which I have in my Mike Lull Modern 4 & 5 J-Basses) and that's a large part of My Sound, which is why I'm going with Big Singles. If I were to go the DC route I'd actually get Nordstrand DCs over the Bassline "Passive Phase II NYC Soapbars" DCs. They're actually a bit cheaper than the latter, and, well... they're Nordys. :D

I really think I'm starting to head the same direction as far as preferring single coils to humbuckers but I have yet to try the higher end of dual coils (Nordstrand, Aero, Kent Armstrong, etc) and the basses that use them so I can't say for sure yet. And I was seriously thinking of going with Nordy's but from what I've seen they're significantly more expensive. The SDs are $245 on bestbassgear.com while the Nordy's start at $315 and It's probably more because the the EMG40 size isn't standard. I'm sure either would sound great but you're definitely right about the Nordy's being... Nordy's, lol :D.

It's really hard to tell since we can't see the wood on the back. It's either a NS4 CRFM, Euro 4 or Euro 4LX. Again, PJ Rubal will be able to tell you what model and year it is.

High time I joined the fray.

Here's my NS2-A. Bought new in 1988 at Modern Music in Ft. Lauderdale (Jaco aficionados will know that store.) I couldn't really swing the cost of the NS-2 back then and this was the next best thing.

Was long ago rewired with straight EMG's (no preamp) and installed a Hipshot (the wrong one the Schaller in black was hard to find back then.)

It was my main bass for a long time. I got into a phase where I got into different basses and put her aside. I did pull it out for recording though it sound great in the studio. After I got away from playing I got rid of all my gear but couldn't part with it.

Now that I'm back playing again I have my old favorite to keep my fingers busy. She's got a few battle scars on her but still plays like a dream and I'm glad I never got rid of her. Any chance of a number?

OK - time for me to step in too.

Here's my NS-5XL with East U-retro pre-amp. This is an oiled finish quilted maple one and it is by far the best instrument I have ever played/seen/heard/owned.

It's my main working instrument now that it's had the East pre-amp installed. I did the job myself and a thread on how can be found Invalid Link Removed

What about goig with the EMG TW's? I think they are basically DC's that can be split to get a single coil tone.

Actually, the EMG TWs are CSs that can be tapped single coil. According to EMG inc. The CS is closer to a traditional sounding humbucker and traditional, too me, means less mids and more lows which isn't what I'm after. Ideally, I'd have a pickup that would sound like a Fodera Tom Kennedy signature in humbucking mode and a a solid jazz bass in single coil mode. Brian from bestbassgear.com told me that the SD NYC-5s will get me closer to the Fodera sound and that the rumor is they're actually the same pickups that Fodera uses in their basses just in a different shape. I like EMGs but this sounds like it could be something awesome. I actually considered going with the TWs first but then I revisited the Tonedump Ultimate thread and my mind was changed :D.

Absolutely stunning :eek:! I've never wanted a USA Spector more, lol. I've only seen one other quilted Spector that I've wanted as much as this one and the black and gold combo is dead sexy. So tell us, exactly how awesome is the East pre?

Totally inspiring. Thanks for sharing that. I've only owned my NS-2A since December of last year but it totally feels like home to me. A great introduction to my Spector lust.

hey guys,

first, i know this isn't the for sale section. but i figured since it was spector specific i'd throw it in here to help you guys (and myself) out.

i just wanted to give you guys a heads up. i have read in this thread (i think it was actually part 2) about spector strings and people wondering how they sounded. i was able to get a few sets pretty cheap. i have some remaining sets to sell because i honestly don't play enough to keep them around. it'd be years before i got to them. so if you're interested in checking out spector strings here's what i have left.

I was wondering if a fellow Spector owner could help me out. I want to figure out if my older Euro NS4 CRFM has a thinner neck than the newer LX version. Can someone who has a 4-string Euro LX take a measurement of the neck thickness (say right behind the 1st, 7th and 12th frets) and post the results? I would be interested in knowing the thickness of a Rebop4DLX neck too if anyone has one.

I for for certain that the neck is thinner on the NS4CRFMs than than the current Euro LX's I just can't say by how much. I can take measurements when I get home from work though.
