I've got a question for you guys with passive Spectors. Do you still have that "Spector sound"? I find I always have my tonepump set flat and was wondering how passive electronics compared.

While I'm at it I have another question. How much do EMG's contribute to the "Spector sound"? I keep thinking about dropping a pair of series wound Nordstrand DC's into my bass.

No such thing as a passive Spectors, man. There some without active pickups but even then they have active preamps.

Yeah most 3 knob Spectors I see are USA models which are active as well.

I think EMGs are big part of the sound but not an absolute defining factor. Some guy made a thread about ho he dropped some Seymour-Duncan dual coils into his Spector Euro 5LX and it sounded different, more traditional but it very much had the Spector sound. The tone was a little darker with less sharpness but still Spector somehow, lol. I actually thought about dropping a set of Nordstrand DCs in my Euro 6LX and I got a quote of like $400 I think which pretty much the a wrench in that plan :p. I've got this gut feeling though that if anything were to sound better in a Spector than EMGs it would be Nordstrands, dunno why though.

Actually I believe Mike's signature basses are all passive. I think there is a clip on youtube where he explains his choice for the passive electronics. If I remember right, I think he just didn't want to worry about changing the batteries on the road.

It wouldn't surprise me, I just wasn't sure. :) To me it doesn't make tons of sense to have a passive preamp and active pickups, like my Charvel has.

His stuff still sounds great live, so a Spector is a Spector is a Spector. :)

Yeah, I'm sure it'd be real hard for him to remember to make sure his roadie remembers to change the batteries. :rollno:

I've never had a Spector Euro w/ the TonePump installed.

I've only had the "real" (;)) euro Czech CRFM's w/ the Spector or Aguilar pre. It's only 9V (I think?) instead of 18V so it's not as hot, but I'd be interested to hear them side by side.

The H-L is very nice. I pretty much leave it at flat w/ only a tad bit of Bass boost.

I've had the Haz copy, which some say is like the EMG BTS which I currently have along with the Tonepump both in CRFM's..

I A/B'd the BTS and Tonepump about a week ago and they are very different. The BTS needs the bass boosted (IMO) otherwise sounds a bit thin to my ears set flat. I've found the same with the Haz. The Tonepump is very hot, and it's "zingy", Spector on steroids if you will. That is set flat. I run through an Ampeg combo set flat, or a GK 800RB set flat.

I love the Tonepump and have an extra one and may replace the BTS with it if I end up keeping that CRFM.

That's probably pretty accurate. The Tonepump is definitely more biting and zingy, whereas the H-L is a little more "even". I always bump the Bass on any instrument I use, so that's just habit more than actually needing it.

And how my 2nd channel on the Titan is set up, which is more clean and fat, I actually roll the Bass to 0 so it doesn't get too flubby.

A lot of that is just in the construction of my '85, tho... ;)
