Spector Club Pt. 3 (Insert Clever Title Here)

Kano- At one point it was possible to get the Tone Pump in a USA bass. I have played several with this setup.

Molan- That rootbeer brown looks really good!

Moondoggy- Nice purple basses! I have played a BOB before- someday I would like to get one.

The BOBs (NOT REBOPS!!) are incredible. They still have a Spector-ish tone, BUT...unlike most other Spectors, these things can get ANY other tone. The stacked mid sweep and frequency controls on these are amazing and can easily achieve the bell-like Ric tone. I know it sounds dumb, but they can make any amp sound like a vintage Ampeg! Sweep the freq select knob and you even get a wah effect! These have been going up in price recently, but it's still a DEAL under $1K. Heck....it's a USA SPECTOR!! I highly recommend them.

BTW....some PLEASE buy this:

It's a rare non-SSD (just Stuart Spector), but with dot inlays and in 34" scale. I thought all dot-inlaid 34" Spector 5s were SSD eras. I guess I thought wrong. And look at the flame maple in that neck!! Jeez wiz!!!

As the listing says, the post-SSD Spector NS-5CRs from '94 to '98 were equipped with dot inlays as opposed the the Spector Crown Inlays, and also were 34"-scale 5-strings as opposed to the increase to 35" as this bass is. That makes it fairly rare and a great find for anyone who would like a Spector 5-string but is uncomfortable with the increase in scale length.

However, their assertion that "the newer ones are 35" w/fatter necks and are much more difficult to play" is simply opinion and hardly "fact", as well as the comment that "the Euro 5 LX has a cheaper alder back w/figured maple top only" - I've played all-Maple as well as Alder/Walnut/Maple LX neck-thrus, and prefer the LXs for it's lighter weight as well as the increased fundamental that the Alder gives as well as the reduced "crispy" high-end from the reduction of Maple.

That's some good stuff! Tell us some more about that MK5 with the P/J setup. That's the only Spector I have ever seen with P/J and 5 strings. Has Mikes sound changed noticeably since switching from the Peavey gear? Thanks for sharing;)

I've been thinking about getting new pickups for my spector (it has passive emgs), but I'm not sure which ones to get. I really like the sound of "high end" spectors, that's a possibility of getting some active emgs. However, I've searched on the internet a little bit and found this brand. SGD Lutherie pickups sound really good too :o.
Any suggestion would be helpful.

Thanks,
Ivan

I think the Tone Pump has been replaced with an EMG pre but wondered if there's a definitive thread somewhere that discusses other pre or pickup options?

Basically I love the bass from a sheer playability aspect but I find the sound a bit 'one-dimesional' and compressed.

Might be nice to have something with a 3 band eq option but not sure if there's a way to do this without drilling nasty holes!

Easily the most astonishing Spector I've ever seen! I never new they made "dark wood" spectors, I thought that they were either alder, maple or both. Then again I guess it could be a dark stain. Either way it's beautiful! What is the body wood?
