Spector Club Pt. 3 (Insert Clever Title Here)

So lately I've been GASing for the jazz bass tone but I don't exactly want a jazz bass. And being a Spector enthusiast I would really like the J bass tone but in a Spector package. I was thinking of possibly grabbing a Spector Euro 5LX and dropping in a pair of EMG 40Js. Can anyone give their opinion on how faithful they are to the traditional J tone? This is just speculative right now because I don't exactly have the funds to do it just yet but I'd like to get an idea of how it would work out.

Kwesi...if youre not dead set on a 5 string you might check out the Spector NS2-JA-R. Those reissues are bolt-on neck with EMG J/J pickups and EMG preamp and are about as close as you can get to a Jazz bass sound/feel in a Spector....I had one for a while but traded it. I just prefer the P/J pickup configuration on a Spector, but the NS2JAR was a great sounding Spector and had a flavor all its own.

I was actually just offered one of these but I just don't have the cash right now. I'm convinced that my Euro 4LX is the only 4 string I'll ever need (we'll see how long that lasts :p) so I'm pretty set on finding a 5er.

Well I agree...the Euro 4LX is all the 4 string youll ever need...unless you want it to sound like a jazz...heheheheheheheh...dropping a set of 40J's into a Euro 5 might get you awfully close...then again...dropping a set of 40J's and an EMG preamp into a Rebop5 might get you even closer!

Maybe get the dual coil model. Only wire up one of the coils. If you don't like the sound of the single coil in the front you could add the second coil to fatten it up. I don't think they cost much more.

If you really want the Spector take on the Jazz tone, you'll get closer with a Rebop than you would with a Euro LX due to the bolt-on neck. Plus, the Rebop is less expensive, leaving you more funds to switch out the pickups. The Rebop is every bit as Spector as the Euros are, but they are much lighter and the neck profile is a little skinnier. Also, the sustain of the Rebop is as good as any bass I've ever had and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the Rebop and a Euro LX if they had the same electronics.

The EMG 40J pickups would do fine IMO regardless of which bass you get. They don't sound traditional, compared to a Fender, but they do sound similar to the EMG J set. As close as you'll get with an EMG soapbar.

While on vacation, I had the opportunity to try out this bass. Man, it is sweet and very different from my NS5 neck thrus, but still very Spector. The 3 band pre combined with the EMG CS-TW pickups offers a broad range of tones. On top of that, it weighs just over 8lbs (wished I could say that about mine). Oh and the top looks absolutely wicked.

Here's a quick look at one of my Spectors. It's a Euro LX. I'll post more pics properly soon.

I'm a long time Spector enthusiast. Have owned a 4-string NT for almost 20 years now, I think it's a Korean build SSD. It has been my favorite for a long time. Some time ago I got a Spectorcore and then a Euro 5LX. The Spectorcore has no mojo for me, although I should try it again. The Euro 5 is lovely. Quite a bit more aggressive than the older 4 string, less suitable for songs that ask for a warmer or jazzy tone.

The last few years I've started playing fretless, the fretless Ibanez gets most of the playing time these days. I dearly love the ergonomics of my Spectors, but you don't see many fretless versions, let alone hear them. Does anyone have MP3 samples of what fretless Spectors can sound like?
