Sorry I had to chuckle at this...I just had Carpel-Tunnel surgery on my left hand...wanna guess what kind of bass Ive been playing for the last 15 years?

Ecch, sorry to hear that... but on the other side, just imagine how much worse it would be if you've been playing ultra thin-necked Jazz basses or Ibanez for those years.

I don't like you, Dave. Why? Because you have the bass that is giving me such GAS pains! That's a beauty! While I love the sound of the through neck with the soapbars, I also love the sound of a bolt-on with the J pickups. They have an incredible punch with the massive low end that Spector is known for.

That's what I'm going for with my ReBops - the plans is to remove the EMG HZs and TonePump and install either an Aguilar OBP-1 or 3 and Nordstrand Big Singles - I find the ReBop's to be "Spector's Jazz Bass" with the bolt-on body and traditional Jazz bass body woods, and to match it up with an aggy pre and Big Singles would make the ultimate "Spector Jazz Bass"... a nice cross-section between the traditional neck-through/EMG Spector and a bolt-on/single coil Jazz bass.

Chris, Nola, thanks for the comments - as of an hour ago she's paid for, mine legally, and should arrive hopefully before the weekend. I'm going to do the ToneDump when she arrived, but would rather go with an Aguilar OBP-1 or 3. I know the 3 is far more useful with the mids, especially on a fretless, but can anyone let me know if someone with minimal soldering skills can get their way through an OPB-3, or should I stick to the 1?

Cute... I don't see how it could've been any worse, but just for the record, I love small Jazz/Ibanez necks, and my Kramer NS-2C is very close to the same size as a jazz neck...and I love that thing I guess the chunky-ness of the Spector necks are my least favorite thing about them. But nothing sounds like a Spector...and they are PURE bass porn! My addiction continues...I just bought Mental Octopus's Black Spector NS-2JA (drooling, waiting for it to get here)...LOL...and I'm still waiting to find another Kramer NS-2C ...anyone got one laying around?

I suppose that explains how we're of different likes and dislikes regarding that - I took my old, "first good bass" out over the weekend, a '92 SR-800 for the firs time in years, and the neck was so thin not only could I barely play it, it was hard to remember that I did so at least 2 practices a week plus gigging and sessions back in the day: it was my main bass in my "band" days for about 4 straight years.

But nothing sounds like a Spector...and they are PURE bass porn!

I'd keep your eyes on eBay and set your "Favorites" to inform you when any are listed - I've seem more then a few pop up over the past few weeks. You also have to skim all the Spector listings every few days, as most people who are sellng off one they found in a basement/garage sale/pawn shop have no idea what model it is are are likely to mislist them. If I see one incorrectly listed, I'll give you a holler.

You'll see in the second pic what is supposedly Victor Wooten's signature. No way to verify but that is what the old Bass Palace told me.

I think I remember seeing this one for sale at the Base Palace a while back. I think the add said that Victor used this bass for a clinic or show that he was doing when his trusty Fodera was having some issues. You should email Victor to see if it's true or not. It would be pretty cool if it is.

I'd love to hear Vic do some recording with a Spector. Tone wise, I can imagine them suiting him well. I recall playing an NT Euro with EMG P/J's and it sounded a lot like his Fodera. That was my first major Spector GAS!

As for Ebay, I don't think there has been an NS-2C on there in god knows how long...I see NS2A's and NS2B's on there all the time, but the Ns-2c with the bolt on neck and Spector pickups is a needle in a hay stack...Ive been watching Ebay, Craiglist, Guitar Center, Bass Place, Emporium etc and a few others for months now and havent run on to one...another TB'er msgd me that he had seen one in a GC in New Jersey (I believe) but it was white like the one I currently have....waiting for a red, blue or black one to come along...Thanks!

So many players I grew up emulating and learning their lines had white NS-2s (Eddie Jackson of Queensrÿche, Kip Winger of Winger, Rachel Bolan of Skid Row, Sting's "R'n'R Hall Of Fame" NS-2, etc...) but she thinks, and I quote "It looks like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Bass" and unfortunately when she pays half the bills, and to be fair, has okayed more basses then I "deserve" ( ) I've learned to be respectful to the woman that says "Yes" to so many others.

LOL - I hear ya! Actually, my wife is pretty good about that stuff, too. I can't begin to tell you how many times the words "this is the last one - I promise!" have come out of my mouth!

Right with you on that... I was actually fine from the time I bought "The Sisters", my fretted Black Cherryburst ReBop 5 DLX FM and fretless Blueburst ReBop 5 DLX FM last Winter. I felt that I was all good in terms of basses and that this year was going to focus on pickups and electronics. Then I got my Lull Modern 4 for a fantastic deal, and the resolve goes down a fair amount.

After that I was able to grab my ReBop non-DLX but with the active pups and electronics of EMG CS, DC, and a BTS System for a *song* and my "Deal Radar" was switched back on! (that's how at the local GC Memorial Day sale two weeks ago I was able to find my MusicMan SUB Sterling in like-new condition sprayed in a color they only did six of... totally before shutting down the SUB lines!) At that point I was actively looking for a nice used ReBop 4 Zebrawood - I had tried a friend's out, and as much as I like my old-school ReBop, the combination of Zebrawood & Alder was one that hit me like a boxer... and I'm one who thinks the note attack on a standard ReBop is somethng fierce! Between this and my Lull I've got four-strings covered for damn sure! AND I'm simply lucky the "ZeBop" I found happens to be in immaculate shape! ("immaculate" isn't a pun in this case - the former owner is a church player )

...but I can say for good that I'm done with sale instruments for the rest of the year unless it's one of a few I have left that are heading out. Any that attempt to head *in* and they'll be searching for my body for months... we live right by a fairly large State Park System, and she's working on her Doctorate in Psychology, which means she'd likely be able to lie hooked up to a detector and easily pass it!

I just had to share this.
My brother's bass player can't make a gig this weekend so he asked me to sit in on a gig and I agreed. His bass player plays a Jazz through a SWR rig and it sounds, well like a Jazz would.
I showed up to rehearsal with my small rig and it sounded pretty darned good, albeit a bit anemic in volume. A friend showed up with his Mesa/Boogie 400+ and powerhouse cab rig that he's going to let me borrow for the show. When I plugged in and dialed in the Spector growl, the other guys nearly crapped their pants! I used to play my US NS-2's through a SVT, but this new Euro through the Mesa just brutalizes everything! Small animals were dying and toddlers and babies within a block radius were puking! The Tonepump wasn't that bad, but I colored it a little with the SansAmp.
After a couple of songs, the guys mentioned how much more aggressive the songs sounded with the Spector. I told them it was my massive chops! I can't wait to let it loose on Saturday!
I think I've found what I've been searching for for a long time! Mesa + Spector = pure death!

It also has Gotoh tuners. The only real finish issues are heavy swirl marks and some pick scratches. Overall it's in great shape for it's age. I think there is only one actual ding and it's not through the finish. I'm not sure I want to do this, but with the NS2JA-R and the new P-Bass w/flats, I feel the NS2A just isn't needed.

Seriously though, if you have the space to keep it, hold on to it. I've regretted selling mine and the guy who ended up buying it loves it. I don't know if you have kids and they want to start playing, let them learn on the best.

I sold my NS-2A (cherryburst, EMG's, Aguilar OBP-3, Hipshot Extender) last year for just under 600. It was probably a little more beatup than yours based on your description. Then again, I just picked up a neck thu Euro in great shape off of ebay for 650. I think it all depends on if you can find an interested party and what else is on the market that is comparable. You should be able to get 500 easy.

I have a Euro LX5 with TonePump electronics. What happens if I replace the TonePump with an Aguilar OBP-3? Anyone here already tried this?

Yer on the right track Tom

The Custom has a fairly thin profile compared to many. The Classic is a tad more beefy by comparison --not a bad thing depending on what you're looking for but I definitely wanted thinner, which the set-neck on the Custom allows.

I tried a lot of 5ers in the $500-600 range (Ibby, Yamaha, Schecter, etc) and the Peavey Millenium was the closest in feel to the Spector in the neck (and no offence to the the Peavey players but the I thought the Legend Custom had it beat for quality and attention to detail and worth the extra $).

In fact, I bought the Custom for the neck and the string spacing. Lord knows I'm still not reconciled to that gold hardware

By the way, the set-up on this bass was great out of the box. Low and nearly even. The set neck scares some people off, though it does have a truss rod, I have not had to tweak it. I like the stock strings too, which I believe are made by GHS.

Isn't the string spacing on all Spector 5-strings 17mm? Or were you refering to the spacing at the nut?
