Double Bass Spiros! Back to bass-ics

You guys are sweet, but I wasn't kidding about never really bonding with that bass the way I'd hoped. To me, it was a nice ply to keep in the office so I wouldn't have to drag my main bass in every morning to teach and do rehearsals on. To the young lady who bought it, it was about 3 or 4 steps up from her Shen SB80, and something to get excited about. She deserves a better bass anyway...it just sucks that she had to get in a nasty wreck to do it. I figure at worst, I'll end up with a bass I feel about the same about, and at best, the new one will feel more like the main one.

It's a funny thing, this aversion to flatbacks. I think it has something to do with sitting neo-cello style with my legs wrapped around the bass. The vibrations against the inner legs and solar plexus are all part of the playing experience, and flatbacks vibrate differently, maybe radiating in a different pattern or something. I don't know, but it was distracting not to have the vibrations feel the same. All the other plys I've played have been roundbacks, and I haven't had that experience with them.

Sorry for the thread derail, Les. If you want, I can move this tangent somewhere else. Thanks for the good thoughts, guys. :)

Oh, and Jake - I almost made it to the library today to check that one out. Soon. Thanks for the recommendation.

I do really enjoy how we're saying "Inner thigh and Solar Plexus" When we all know where he's REALLY feeling the vibrations...;)

On the round-back issue, I also like round-backs. They just seem to fit with my leg better when I'm sitting. I'm really hoping to be able to afford a New Standard La Scala by next year with the roundback. It's time for an upgrade from my Kay (not exactly a good sound for orchestra).

This reads, mostly, like a complaint against a marital aid device company. I has no idea they do come in flatback design. :eek:

Yeah, it was a good trade all around. I liked the Spiros at first on my bass - and I still like that sound on smaller basses I hear strung up with them. The big scooped out string thing in the end just didn't sit with my big scooped out sounding bass I think.

44.5" is hilariously long, isn't it? It was slim pickin's around town when I acquired it. I'm hoping to get something a bit more manageable by the spring time, and I can keep this one for the rockabilly/country/(and maybe) big band gigs. It's not really worth selling anyway.

I'm surprised we haven't had the "practicing naked" talk around here yet. Chris, you might want to check out the security cam situation at work before you get too into the vibrations of your new roundback when you get it. :D

I had a bass with a 43" and mittels didn't work at all on that. Animas just killed and I suspect EP weichs would have been good as well. On my little German flatback though mittels are fabulous.
