SPRAY PAINTED BASSES, let's see 'em

How's about some Swirling with Humbrol Enamel Paints :bassist:

* Hondo body, Fodera neck (nut cut by joey for piccolo strings),
* Hondo P pickup / DeArmond lipstick tube pickup / no-name pedal steel pickup
* coil-tap for the pedal steel pup
* 5 BBs shot into the back (don't remember how)
* red, taxi-yellow and green body sprays over a 10 year period.

A growly, dire sound. Best sound clip of it is the opening track of the movie "Bright Lights Big City"- the tune is "Love Attack", i cut the bass track with this bass in normal (non-piccolo) tuning.

My newly refinished Fury.

ReRanch Orang Orange Nitro Lacquer.
Tiramisu Pickguard.
Dunlop Straplocks
CTS pots
Switchcraft Jack
White Pup covers
Orange Drop Capacitor
Stock Pups
DR Neon Orange Strings
Frets Polished and leveled

That's lovely. Nice job :)

Slightly off topic, but that Fury has a lovely fretboard

Hi all. Good thread. I am thinking about refinishing a VM P (the white one). My plan is to light sand it, just enough to knock the gloss off it. Spray it. Seal it with several coats of wipe-on poly. Any flaws in that plan ? Any special considerations as far as paint types (enamel, acrylic, etc) being incompatable with a wipe-on poly topcoat ?

How many cans (color and clearcoat) to finish a Jazz Bass? I'm really considering an SX Ash Body. Those are in natural... would I have to remove all the finish; just make it thinner (using it as some kind of "grain sealer"); or just spray the color and the clearcoat over? I think the last one would be a tone sucker, but I really know near to nothing about paint, so maybe is just ok.

Nothing complicated, I really don't like the natural finishes but love ash tone, so I will give it a Black finish, with black hardware... more or less of a "stealth" look :D

Hi basscamel

Go to this link:

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

or search youtube for "Swirling + painting guitars"

read and do test runs before committing to doing a whole body

Good Luck!

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure if I'm going to do it on one of my basses but I have a cheap strat squire I bought like a year ago I'm thinking about doing it to. I seen a bass like yours only diffrent colors in bassplayer magazine a few months ago and I always wonder how they did that. Now I know!

Thank you!

Dude! I know the photo is pretty dark but are you serious that's a spray can job? it looks insane!

Thanks man:) That was my 2nd paint job, and I only started a month before that.

And yeah, I got the spray-on dye from reranch.com, and I got the Minwax clear from Lowes.

It's the prep and finishing that takes all the time... I had to let that thing air dry for almost a month!

I got most of my info from this helpful forum:

Attached are before and after pics of one of my summer projects. It's an Ibanez GSR205 that I picked up on Ebay a few months ago. The body had a few scratches and dings, and just wasn't that exciting to look at, so I thought it would be a good candidate for a refin. This is my first attempt at painting an instrument since I've only done clear coats on necks in the past. The body color is Krylon fluorescent green. I chipped some of the paint off the neck joint holes and near the output jack and the clear coat blushed in a few spots on the neck, but overall, I'm pretty happy with it.
