SPRAY PAINTED BASSES, let's see 'em

Question about spray painting bodies;

I have a poly-coated indonesian squier P bass. If I scuffed up the surface (steel wool, sandpaper, Random Orbital Sander, etc) without entirely removing the poly, could I spray over that and achieve a durable surface?

I took a squier affinity body and sandpapered the surface until the clear coat was what I would call "cloudy," where it wasn't very transparent anymore from all the sanding, to make sure I had sanded the entire surface. I cleaned off the dust and whatnot then sprayed primer directly to it, and the finish came out quite well. Your experience might vary but it worked for me, though I used rustoleum auto primer because its what I had on hand. :D

Did this J bass with rattle cans years ago:

I did pretty much the same, took the clear coat right off and sanded the colour to a matt finish. Primer over that. Worked great

So glad I ran across this thread. I have a cheap Indonesian P bass copy that I got on craigslist and I want to paint it like an Apache helicopter (thats what I work on) with rivets, panel lines, a "danger" arrow like the one that points towards the tail rotor, and a tail number. Now I have a little more confidence!

:hyper:

Here's my spray painted black Ibanez TR-500, which pleases my black bass fetish as well as my love for the Joe Strummer Telecaster, or at least I hope it will in the future. I used to play a P Bass back in the day, and I even still have the body, although the neck is shot. So I figured I'd resurrect the body out of the garage, upgrade it quite a bit, and see how I like it. I wasn't so sure about the color, but I finally found a match. The bass (originally a Fender knockoff) has gold hardware, and is strung through the body, so I'll be using the existing tuners and bridge unless I find something I can upgrade it with that will work with the thru-body bridge that does not also cost me my right and left testicles in the process.

Having a heavy background in illustration, I mocked this up.

  1. Krylon Ivy Leaf paint
  2. Original tuners and bridge
  3. Gold hardware elsewhere (pickguard screws, etc.)
  4. Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickups with white covers
  5. Warmoth neck (providing I can find one inexpensive enough)

Thoughts?

think it looks beautiful

I did some googling on Mighty Mite reviews and they looked pretty positive. From what I can tell, a lot of people who had issues with them simply hadn't bothered to properly install and set them up. Sound about right? They say they're licensed by Fender, but that's sort of nebulous. I heard some folks talking about how they are built to certain Fender specs, but didn't post any details ... Hmmm.

I'd also be able to afford a bridge and tuner upgrade in the process if I went with a Mighty Mite. Thanks for the suggestion.

So far, the body is now paintless, with no electronics. Time to sand out and fill some dings it got back in the day, and then prime. Might be awhile before I can get to it ... we're gigging every weekend through September between central Illinois and eastern Iowa.

Time to break up all these nice-lookin paintjobs with a (comparitively) ugly bass
Previous owner had sanded (HORRIBLY) zakk wylde-esque rings into the body, I had tried smoothing them out and painting them a separate color, but it was just too tacky for me, so i finally dissassembled it and gave it a new paintjob. Its my beater, and testbed for modding, so I don't care too much about looking pretty like most of the previous instruments in this thread. One can of rustoleum hunter green later and it looked much less ugly

still ugly up close with the sander carnage showing, but what do i care it sounds great :D

Dude! How does the guitar pickup sound?

I've since scrapped and rebuilt it, but at the time because of the location it was big and fat, the pickup itself was designed to sound a bit scooped on guitar, so with the flats it was just massive lows. Output was a bit low, I couldn't get it as close to the strings as I would have liked. Got the idea from McSpunkl'es monster seen here: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/po...ter-read-ugly-480447/index10.html#post7339922

Ok, I refin'd this for the bass player in my old band just to prove I could put a nice finish on with a rattle can. This is my one and only refin job to date.

Here is the best "before" pic I can find, the guy that painted it for him put like a thousand coats of garbage paint on it then drizzled paint on it and blew it around with an air brush, big globs of paint and thick runs all over it. Thats me with my guitar face on playin the McCarty.
