Squier 40th Anniversary Vintage Edition Bass ???

Hey,

I got quite nice deal at guitar center for Squier 40th Anniversary bass in satin vintage blonde, just 450 USD. Before i purchase this bass i want to ask a few questions. I have heard that these series have issues with hum/buzzing because of Anodized Aluminum pickguard?

How do You find these basses? Any other issues with these series?

No experience at all with these Squiers. I have used the anodized aluminum guards on several basses over the years. If anything I think they improve 60 Hz insulation.
Precision bass pickups are, by definition, hum-cancelling pickups anyway. If there is a hum problem, I'd suspect a faulty ground.

Well, if it does cause hum, which I doubt it will, you can swap out the PG for a plastic one. If it still hums, you have a different problem, which I would diagnose before I swapped the PG. Unless I wanted a different PG anyway. I’m not a fan of aluminum PGs.

Okay thanks, i think i will get this vintage blonde one. If Precision pickups are hum canceling we good to go. A the moment i own Squier CV50 Precision bass in white blonde...but...its quite pinkish which i dont like

Noted. I just wanted to ask because i have heard some people have had issues with hum. I guess ill give it a try. really dig the way it looks and sounds. I might replace pickguard to a parchment in future but i love the way it looks

If I had extra money I would get one of these to put tapewounds on, but do not need it. Either the blonde or red would do.

My experience with this 40th Anniversary Squier series is very positive. Pickups were great, tuners worked well, no neck issues whatsoever. Happy out of the box-while I love my Vintera P more (wide neck with flatwounds has a really yummy feel), it is the Squier that is getting the most playtime, though I modified the pickups. The neck is still awesome. Nothing to complaint about.

That said, I must mention that in your case with the vintage blond, some people have reported very mild, greenish coloration to the wood. For me it wouldn't be a big deal, but it may be for you.

(For what it's worth-i.e. not much-I love the gold pickguard in my two basses that sport them, the Squier *and* the Vintera. A matter of aesthetics-I did them a lot, but not hard to modify.)

Anodized guards should DECREASE hum. Aluminum guards reduce hum similar to how copper shielding does. Fender even sells aluminum shielding to stick to the back of plastic pickguards. If an anodized instrument has hum it's probably from something else, like not enough shielding in the cavities or a bad ground.

The bass should silent as mouse if she has factory shielded paint along with wire connect from pot to shielded cavity.

I own all 3 CIC CV bass with nice factory shielded and ground. But, the current indo made CV50P and Fender Vintera 5s P has blank cavity !

I have a 40th anniversary precision. Love it so much Ive just ordered a jazz too. No noise issues. This anniversary line comes stock with alnico pickups. Sounds fantastic. Neck feels great too. Really amazing basses. Every bit as good as a mim player but better looking and arguably better feeling to play.

The aluminum pickguard has so much mass that it actually reduces single coil hum (of course it needs to be grounded through contact with the pots and/or the shielding) so in a Jazz bass, where only the neck pickup is surrounded by the guard, the bridge pickup will be noisier and the two won't be hum cancelling at full volume.

In a P bass this issue won't exist obviously.

If the pickguard is bonded to the rest of the grounding system of the bass, it can only help mitigate noise issues.

If required magnetic properties for noise reduction, aluminum or copper would not do the job.

I just got one. GC is running a sale for $299 so I figure they are closing them out.

I bought it online sight unseen and I got the blonde. It's somewhat transparent and I can see some wood grain. Is that expected? I was expecting it to be a solid color. It's somewhat pleasant and if that's the way it is OK, but I just don't want to be cheated out of 3 or 4 coats of paint.
