Squier Affinity Jaguar Bass...H?!

initial impression of the bass is so/so.

Overall I'd say it's a good but over hyped bass. It's definitely grown on me and I do like it. I'm sure everyone looked up YouTube reviews before buying one and I think I share a lot of thoughts with Jonny Dibble's review. It cost me £170 new I mean you really can't grumble, I think I probably had unfair expectations.

The neck dive is always going to be an issue, mine has to have a good quality strap on at all times to hold playing position. I'm enjoying playing the neck a lot more now, I still wish it was a little bit slimmer, especially higher up but it's good. May well sell it on still, been eying up an Ibanez Mezzo but all the same I'm happy using the Jag.

I have a spare black pickguard for sale if anyone is after one (UK).

i personally don't find it to be overhyped. it's my favorite bass i own, even though i have 2 other more expensive. it's my favorite to play, and it sounds great with tapes. my first one had serious neck dive but 2nd one has virtually none.. so there's a bit of a lottery in that regard. both were immaculate quality otherwise.

i also owned a mezzo for a while which was similarly impressive to me at first, but i had issues with the pencil thin neck after spending time with it. both comfort wise and quality/structure wise. worth mentioning the mezzo definitely nailed the brighter more modern sounds better than the jag if it's more your thing.

Hi all,

I've got one of these in Charcoal Frost Metallic, looking to upgrade the nut to a TUSQ XL. Has anyone done similar and can tell me which part to order to save taking the strings off and taking out the current nut to check? On the specs it says 1.5" (38.1 mm) wide.

Keeping my eyes peeled for an interesting MM style pickup to replace the stock also, want to fit something I can wire series/parallel/split to get a few different sounds.

I have a SD SMB-4A that's wired (mini toggle) series/parallel. It sounds great with D'Addario Chromes. Also added a thumb rest (super warm sounds) and a Hipshot bridge and Ultralite tuners.

It took me over a year to complete this project. Between work, supply chain issues, etc... but here it is and I could not be happier with the result. List of mods:
  • Shielded the pickup cavity and the control cavity
  • Painted the headstock and control plate
  • Hipshot Ultralight Y Tuners, B Style bridge, and black string tree
  • Bakelite knos
  • CTS 250k pots, Orange Drop cap (47nF 100V), Switchcraft jack
  • Nordstrand Big Blademan 4

I got one of these a couple weeks ago just as a backup, but then the short scale backup I wanted finally came in stock. I’m really impressed by this bass! The neck feels so comfortable and the edges are great, and that tone is just right up my alley. In between fat P and MM. I have it up for sale, but I’m honestly not minding having it around to pick up every once in a while.

That's rad. How does the blademan sound?

I have the CFM and thinking of similar.

I bought one for the office, but I'm honestly digging it so much I think it will become my one and only fretted. As a backup to my one and only fretless.

Has anyone had trouble cramming anything additional into the control cavity? I bought upgraded pots (still the smaller ones), jack, and I'm trying to install a series/parallel/single switch, and man it seems to really bottom out.

Also seems like there's not much room to route any deeper before coming out the back of the bass...

Any hints here?

I had my tech install that same configuration in mine and he was able to do so without any surgery.

Is that the charcoal color? Looks like mine, the headstock looks good. What did you do to match it?

Left this in my office over Thanksgiving weekend. They turn the climate control off to the offices during that time. Came back and the thing was still perfectly in tune, and the neck didn't budge. Which I was not expecting with a Squier Affinity. What a great value bass.

Anyone know of a P bass pickup in a MM housing?

I found this but it doesn't look like its available anymore; Music man style P-bass Pickup / Ceramic – Roswell Pickups

Can the Blademan get thumpy?
