Actually side by side I think the frets on the Freeman are a little bigger. They are definitely wider and just a hair taller.

Well, I'm blaming this one on you. Just picked up a used Freeman from CL last night.
I haven't measured yet, but I do think the frets feel a little bigger.

I've had the same thing off and on with My Matt Freeman. I ended wedging a small piece of a business card between the 2 saddles (see green circle). Haven't had any issues since. Actually I cannot remember if it was between the E and A saddles or the A and D saddles. I did it in a way that you couldn't really see it and now I have a bridge cover installed.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking it is. I'm looking for thin roundself adhesive fuzzy pads to put between. I have seen these pads, thinner than a business card before, though I can't remember where. I could stick some fabric on double side tape, use a hole punch to make some. These saddles seem to need to be just a bit narrower.

It doesn't have an identifying mark anywhere, the bottom side is textured, and it has tracings where it appears other designs were drawn on the material with a pencil before my pick guard was cut from it.

I should have worded that better. I didn't mean it was a bad bass, just that it doesn't fit the club here.
Her name is Zoey. She was my one and only for a long, long time. I love her dearly, she's on the only album I've ever recorded (here's a taste) I would never sell her in a million years.

Ain't that Freeman pretty? I just adore that maple. One of it's previous owners did some re-muddling though.
The strap buttons are both moved (look closely) and I suspect some fiddling was done to the electronics cause it's actually a little quieter than the sonic blue P. When I A/B'd my blue P against a Freeman at our local TB get-together recently, the Freeman was considerably hotter. This one is substantially quieter. Someone also put a pickup cover on it, which by itself would be cool, but they used these big ugly hex-screws that look really stupid. Ew. So I'm gonna take it all apart this weekend and asses the damage and what I wanna do with it. Hey I bought it mainly for the neck and the neck is 100% flawless.I'm getting a Fender "original" 62 pickup from Georgestrings in the classifieds here, I haven't decided which bass it'll go into first, but I'm guessing it'll have a maple neck on it.

What upgrades has everyone done to their '51 P-bass? I have the blue and maple one. I threw some TI flats on it (my God these strings are amazing) but the tone is still a little too thin for my taste. I LOVE the bass though. It's built better than one of the MIM Fenders I used to own.
Also, has anyone done or seen a blacked-out color scheme with this bass? I'm wondering how it might look.

Hey nickn, glad your your new bass. I have one in LPB also. The first mod I did was absolutely necessary. The output jack on mine gripped the tip of my cord so weakly, it actually fell out a few times while playing. Switchcraft time... I was curious to try a Lollar pickup. It's good but I ended up taking JohnK's advice and installed a Fralin split-coil. Perfect for this bass. It still retains the character of a SCPB but has a tad less on the high-end with more punch in the mids and the E string responds authoritatively. Other mods - bourns pots, synthetic bone nut, maple tugbar, vintage white pearl pickguard, Hipshot A style bridge. End result:

That Fralin pickup is pricey (I'm seeing it for $140) but it sounds like a good investment. Being that it's split-coil, does it sound at all like a standard (e.g. '57 and onward) P-bass?
My CV 50s got a new color, black as you can see [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. I've also put an ashtray and D'Addario flats on. The red pickguard is selfmade. Not to forget the HipShot D-Tuner...
Well, here is my Freeman. Iiiii love her! The SPB3 is BADASS, and the neck is beautiful and comfy, i prefer this to my Warwick Corvette.
