The sonic blue Precision needed a sibling. TBer MetroBass had this jazz's tone circuit upgraded to US components and then listed her in the Classifieds. Lucky me! I'm thinking GHS Pressurewounds for this one.

All right guys, I just picked up the sonic blue CV60 Precision (still with stock electronics) and played it through my solid state reference amp and my LB-30 tube amp. It is a righteous bass! And a looker! What am I missing here? Yes, the knobs are a little cheesy and the tone pot a little scratchy--but it's scary that they can make such a killer bass in China for a third of the price of MIA.

My SBCV just kills. I'm leaving it bone stock with the exception of a pickup cover, which I haven't added yet. It is the growliest P I have ever heard and plays killer. I'd put it up against any other, any day.

I had a gig a month ago, and a friend of mine brought his 1976 Fender Jazz for me to try it out. During the sound check, I couldn't get this thing to work in my band mix (classic hard rock, Led Zep tribute), it was just thin and lacked any balls. So I busted out my CV J to test it, and it kicked the 1976 Jazz so hard in the nuts I never looked back. My friend blamed the thinner tone on the maple fretboard. Could be, but I'm not really buying that 100%.

I seriously doubt the fretboard wood could cause that kind of issue. It's more likely that the pickups are to blame.

It's amazing. My squier matt freeman (which is essentially a CV with a maple board) has the most comfortable neck. There's one high fret (19th, E side), but absolutely no sprouting, finish is perfect. Only real qualm is the knobs feel wayyyyyy too cheap for how good everything else is.

I didn't like the knobs on mine either so I got some very inexpensive replacements from Warmoth that I like much better - chrome.

Mine would be the one, but I love the added stability of the reinforced neck of my MIA P. Scarily though that's the only thing that just nudges it out.

I'm just the opposite, I don't like the feel or sound of Fender's new design graphite reinforced neck. It may be because I started out on the classic Fenders when they were new new back in the mid sixties and that design is what I grew up with and I'm used to. I sold my '64 P in '69 and at the time I was happy with the deal. The '64 I sold was just another Fender P bass, nothing special. Today, I like my '79 P much more than the '64 I started on, and I like my '08 Squier CV 60 and modified '06 MIM P equal to the '79.

Guess our different "likes" just proves "to each his own" and YMMV.
I'm a firm believer in the saying "HOW you play bass is more important than WHAT bass you play".

Stock pickup actually got nice tone, but i found if i follow fender bass standard pickup height setting, that A string sing louder than others & E string seem weak too.

After i make some adjustment, it become balance but A string lose some attack & E string get louder but lack focus sound.
The space between pickup & string measure is :
E string =2mm
A string =4mm
D String =3mm
G string =2mm

With half tone level, i get nice tone.

BUT..... i got a bad habit ~~~ MODIFY

I got a nice price Fender 60 pickup ,Russian PIO .1uF Cap & Chrome pickup cover from EBAY, CV P tone have changing.

First i just do the pickup install, it sound become weak a bit,more thin, lack some low mid warm, but got more focus tone,exspecialy E string. .... but THAT STILL NOT the TONE i WANT!!!

After i change the stock cap to PIO .1uF Cap, same half tone pot level, the warm & low mid return.it still NOT WARM as Stock pickup.

Full tone level with PIO .1 uF cap, that is the ESSENTIAL to P bass Slapping player.

I also found a problem with A string~~ still louder than other string with standard pickup height setup!. I think this is not Stock PICKUP issue. Fender 62 pickup height finally got adjustment to balance sound without losing A string attack tone.

E string = 2.5mm
A string =3mm
D string =2.5mm
G string =2mm

My conclusion & advise is...... Stock pickup already got nice tone, no need make any upgrading, just do some pickup height level balancing finetune.

I wish i can try SD Bassline SPB-1 next time, because i still looking for warmer & keep focus E string note.

Since getting my CV's i sold off all my other basses. These two (mainly the P) do all i need at the moment. I've looked at other basses over the past couple of years but nothing has made me want to stop playing these two.
I suppose its not 100% correct to call them Squiers any more, although the Jazz is still more Squier than the P.
Ive just taken out a Fender Original pup and put a Fralin in the P. I cant say its made much difference, although i do notice its a bit brighter.
I had a P-retro in it for a few months but i felt that took something away from the overall tone and feel. It did add many,many more tones to it but IMO thats not what the P bass is about.

I do need to get a new control plate for the Jazz. Mine has tarnished quite a bit. Can anyone recommend somewhere (im in the UK but dont mind ordering from elsewhere) that sells a direct replacement?

Thanks for the link bob, it looks impressive but way more than im looking to spend.
I really only want an empty plate, ill wire it up myself. Its something ive done before but im a bit worried about the Squier needing a non standard (as in not a standard Fender) plate.
If anyone knows this to be not true ill get a cheap one from Allparts or Axesrus etc.

EDIT: I should point out the Jazz is hardly ever used, so its not a priority, just something i fancy doing.

It's actually a parts build I did, but everything but the neck is a Squier CV 60s
The neck is from an Affinity P/J as I prefer the Satin finish to the gloss on the CV necks

Oh good heavens. I went and plugged in the CV Jazz to the Tech 21 head and 115 cabs. Holy moly!!! This thing just kills, still with stock strings and no new efforts at setup. That is now 2 for 2, as the CV60 Precision is awesome too. Crazy that these Squiers sell for a fraction of a typical Fender, yet sound like the best of 'em.

shhhhhhh don't let this news out. Fender will either discontinue the CV series like they did the Squier Pro Tones back in the late 90's or raise the prices.

Uh oh. Then I won't tell 'em how unbelievably great the CV jazz sounds through a tube amp! My instructor couldn't believe he was playing a Squier. (I played the CV Precision through the Tech 21.)
