I played my first gig th the chromes on last night but was very disappointed to find the D string was very quiet. Even open and in fretted.
I've put my XLs back on but I can still hear it. I had always thought something wasn't right with the D and the chromes have highlighted this.
Not sure what to do now.

ok, I'll toss this one into the mix.
I just received this one from doc540. He did all the heavy lifting so I can't claim any credit for the execution of this one, but it sure turned out nice:
The bass started out as a basic run of the mill Squire CV 50's P with the blue. doc had it refinished in the black (black and white.. VERY cool combo imho), and had a '54 style Fender P decal added to the headstock. The Squire nomenclature on the rear of the headstock and the Squire neckplate are still intact.
He gutted the innards and had it re-wired with 250k pots, shielding, and added a Rio Grande "Muy Grande 51 P" pickup. This thing sounds freakin' fantastic! He also topped it off with my personal faves, Thomastik Infeld TI Jazz Flats. I think it turned out really nice. A Custom Custom Vibe
This is the first Squire CV 50's P I've played and I'm very impressed. Of course, alot of it is doc's custom work, but the thing had "good bones" to start with. It actually compares quite well with the '72 P I have and has very good playability. I'd be confident rocking this one anywhere I play.
That looks sweet, love the B&W. I wish Squier did the 50 Faux in more than LPB, even though I've got the LPB and love it. especially after putting a '51 RI pickup in it. if they made it in B&W i'd buy another (Or a Dirnt if it didn't have that stupid star, though some paint stripper and a rattle can of Fiesta Red could deal with that ...)
Can someone tell me where the trussrod access is on these basses? I've searched this thread and couldn't find any reference to it. Is it on the headstock or is that a cap? Can't tell from the pics.
I just got used to the star, I used to not like it but now I just ignore it. Electrical tape covers it up good and unless you're 2 feet away from the bass you can't tell.
Not a great shot, nor a great gig but here's me and my CV Jazz in action. Shame the wide angle lens makes the headstock look so long.

I subbed for a band practice today ( a rarity for me, a beginner for a while....and I don't get to play in bands very often). A bunch of seriously southern redneck rockand rollers I had talked to once before a few months ago. They called me at the last minute (11 AM sunday) for a noon practice. I went because it was better than doing drywall for my son's room which is what I was doing. They were actually pretty good with a really great drummer (always a plus) and a very long set list.
I took my new Classic Vibe 60's Red P bass and my Markbass rig with me. I have hardly played this bass so it was taking a chance to give it a shakedown.. Holy crap, it kicked butt. Sounded GREAT with a drummer, two guitars and a PA. Played like a dream. The guys liked its sound too.CCR, SRV, Skynyrd, Stones, etc etc. I did fine and the bass was GREAT!!! I'd play it anywhere. It has flats on it and kicks ass. Three hours play time and just perfect. No fatigue, no problems, I'm now officially in love.

Hey Ed, what brand of flats are you using? I've tried Chromes on my P but they didn't have much zing.

Here's my '08 CV Jazz which I bought used. Can I get a number? I gig with it & love this bass. I've made a few insignificant (tone-wise) mods. First, was a USA tort guard which fit perfectly - I only had to add two holes for the tug bar. Looks great compared to the original IMO. Second was a Switchcraft jack for reliability. Third and fourth were a Hipshot drop D tuner, and Schaller strap lock buttons. I usually change the tone cap in my basses, but I don't want to mess with the tone on this one. Its great as it is.
I've never been fortunate enough to play an old Jazz bass, but the CV must come about as close as you can get for the price point of $349.

Was hoping no one would ask. I had a couple of old sets sitting around and put one on the 50's and one on the 60's. I don't know which is which. The ones on the 60's have fuzzy purple windings and brass posts, and the ones on the 50's have black windings and chrome posts. The black winding strings have a smoother texture than the others.
One is a set of Chromes, the other is a set of GHS Precision Flats. Which is which?
Anyone know who uses what windings?
All the Chormes ive used have had a blue winding and different coloured ball ends.
Maybe they used to look different.
GHS Precision flats have purple silk. I have a set on my 60s CV precision and they feel and sound great (45-105).

I like the look of the new guard: my one gripe about the CVs is the crummy tortoise guards they're using. Yours looks nice.
You're exactly right: the price of this series in regards to the quality/tone is unbeatable. Not knocking any of the others basses out there, but good luck finding something this nice for three-fifty.
Yes, the original tort guards look cheesy. Thanks for commenting on my new one. I can't remember which guard it was called exactly, maybe "Deluxe," but it was genuine Fender. It has no notch for truss rod access, and no holes for a tug bar. And like I said, it fit perfectly, I mean exact, only had to drill the two holes for the tug bar.
That's good to know because although I like the white guard on my sonic blue P, I've kinda been thinking about trying a tortoise one on it. I wasn't sure if stock replacement parts would fit.
Thats almost my exact story.
I too have a MarkBass rig and I only picked up my sonic blue P Bass yesterday morning, I had about 2.5 - 3 hours to play it in and I was likeing it so much I took it to my blues band gig last night.
I also took along my MIA P Bass (just in case) but it stayed in the case.
She needs a little bit of set up work done... a slight lowering of the action (I like it quite low) with perhaps a slight adjustment of the pick-ups.
The G-string tuner is a little bit temperamental.... but other than that, what a good instrument.
It feels a little bit lighter than my MIA P-bass (I havent looked up the specs to confirm the difference in the respective weights) and because of that, if Im not careful, I can see it quite easily see it being my go to bass for 3 hour gigs.
Im well pleased.
I'll post a pic soon and ask for a number then please.
