Squier Deluxe Active V modifications, HELP?

I recently purchased a Squier Deluxe active V bass. I love the way the bass plays and feels, but the problem I have is with the sound.

The problem I have with the sound of the bass is that the pickups seem to be very weak in both output and the clarity of their tone.
I try to use the active preamp to tweak the sound, but the controls don't help much in shaping the sound. It seems the bass boost control isn't really a true bass boost, but more of a low-mid boost. Also, the treble doesn't do too much for the actual increase the treble.

Anyways, I have been reading several of the threads that some of the members have posted about their own modifications of their Squiers. I guess I am looking at replacing both the pickups and the preamp. If you guys have any suggestions for pickups that would ad some boost with more clarity and a preamp that would work well with this bass I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks!
