Squier Deluxe Jazz Active V -- Unbelieveable Bass!

ooofffff!! Nice! I made my decision. Fatstacks with Aguilar OBP-3 with active/passive push pull, series, parallel and single selector switch.
I hope you are all right about these basses!
I wanted a wide spacing 5er and after reading so much about these I figured they were worth keeping in mind. One appeared, used, at an online shop... submitted a bid and was accepted. So I should get my hands on a sunburst example in the next few days. At £180 inc delivery I just had to try.

I wonder how many times more than the purchase
price of the bass it would be to put in real inlays.
I only wish I got mine perfectly straight.

My bass arrived today and just spent an hour and a half with it. Very impressed.
Slight buzz was fixed with half turn truss rod. Jack socket will need attention, feels a bit loose in the way it grips the jack, prob will replace. It was used, but cosmetically perfect.
Preamp could be better, but certainly useable. Pickups a bit polite, but again useable.
Slap switch... can't see myself using it much, but I have yet to try it live, in A loud environment the bass boost may actually be cool.
I loved the neck.
The wide string spacing is definitely good for me.
Let's see how I feel after the honeymoon... but first impression is very good.

i dont think there's a bass "boost". i think its a mid scoop. i could be wrong. i leave mine "off" (to the left as you're playing the bass & looking down) all the time.
edit: or maybe it really is a boost & its "on" to the left & "off" to the right? like i said i'm not sure. i thought it was a scoop to the right. i never use it.

I always use the mid scooped positions as well. I agree pickups are polite and the pre is just OK. Im really leaning towards Nordstrand Fatstacks and an Aguilar OBP3 preamp to make my perfect gigging machine. This is my gigging workhorse and I love it!
I will be converting mine into passive very soon, the pots are on their way from Stewmac already. I will keep you informed about the outcome of all this

Always have played P-basses for the fender stuff.
So do any of you have any more to say about the tone
difference between this and a "real" Jazz bass?
I've been satisfied with the tone but I may not know any better.
The use of the word "polite" got my attention. I do prefer
an aggressive tone and play very hard.

I personally think the bass can get aggressive with stainless steel strings, but it got "angrier" after i installed the big singles
ive red some of the thread not all 30 pages (lol) but what I was woundering,when I tried the "fender" version it had a fat neck compared to my SR405 5 string, is the squire about the same neck wise?
The tone on this is not traditional Fender Jazz tone. Its a little different. As for the pickups being polite.The reference is to them not being hot or having a lot of output. As for neck, its not like a traditional Fender Jazz either. Its not so clunky. It is somewhat asymmetric. It will feel bigger than the Ibanez though. These are great basses for the price. Especially for those of us that like 19mm sting spacing.
It's not exactly a bass boost only. But the bass does get boosted.
This is with the switch pointing up/left. I'm assuming this is the ON position. But I see you are actually inverting it. To me it sounds more natural with the switch down/right, and a lot bassier on the left/up position.
I also expected to find a clear scoop. This sometimes involves a bass/treble boost (with optional mid cut) rather than a straight mid cut. The up/left position seems closer to that... but the bass boost is the predominant feature.
I wonder if there are trimpots on the preamp to adjust gain/levels. I must open it up soon.

It sounds nice, but it's not the most "Jazz bassy" sound you can get. I imagine the preamp is laregely responsible for that, but the pickups do seem a bit "meh" to me too. Compared to what a nice typical passive Jazz bass is like. Still nice though.
A Jazz bass on the bridge pickup can have a lot of growl, a very cutting sound, nasal, that works great in the mix. Bring in a bit of neck pickup to tame it slightly and you get a very aggressive yet balanced sound.
This Squier Jazz V doesn't have that. I like it. A lot. But it doesn't sound like a typical Jazz.
I'm toying with the idea of routing the body for a MM type pickup at the bridge, and install a John East preamp.
The reason I bought this is that I really wanted a Stingray in wide string spacing (non-existent) and I am getting impatient waiting for a Lakland 55-02 in the right woods/price... so it could be a way forward!
