I just recorded an album and used this bass on almost every track. (And I have several vintage and custom built instruments).
The only time it didn't work was when the song required something a little less solid and punchy.

@pb9717: I didn't think those basses could look any better but what you have done there is an absolute work of art. Very nicely done.

What are the On/On Mini Toggle Switch positions? (slap/finger) I normally keep it pointing towards the neck.
I had this question here as well when I 1st purchased mine. towards the neck is slap-scoop OFF (normal, or "finger"). away from the neck is the slap-scoop ON (slap or scooped mids)

I was aiming for a Fender Am. Standard P-bass V, but situations change (financially) and my budget for a new fiver became pretty limited. These have gotten pretty nice reviews here (and elsewhere) and I've been playing my jazz a lot lately - so I thought what the heck, let's try this.
I ordered the sunburst one, because I thought that the plain black was a bit dull looking(+ I've been listening a lot of Jaco lately, heh).
My biggest concern is the neck, because I've had cheap instruments before and the neck is always the first to go crooked - which is not easy to repair (everything else is replaceable). But I'm hopeful, maybe this will hold it's own and I'll get a nice, cheap and giggable bass out of it.
I'll post a review when I get it in a couple of weeks.

Honestly, at least in my case, the neck is superb!
I just put some Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pups and a Bass Mods (ebay) 3 band pre in mine and upgraded to schaller strap locks. I'm very impressed. U can't beat it for the money, you just can't. If you like the wide string spacing at the bridge and nut (19mm/2 inch) and wanna save some cash this is the way to go. The pickups and pre did wonders to it.
I have a Fender Marcus Miller V with a John East Marcus Retro preamp. The squier is not as versatile but I'm not losing tones that I use with this bass. It's more than an adequate backup now and its got me thinking about getting another bass with the wide spacing. My Marcus Miller will be in the case alot more. This thread helped me out a bunch too. Saved me alot of time picking out upgrades. Shout out to Iotanet for starting the thread.

I just picked one of these basses up yesterday, and I'm really happy with it so far.
Been tweaking the relief and string height to get the playing feel a bit more comfortable, but part of the issue may just be the transition to a 5 string.

i like this bass, but after all the mods id have to do, im sure theres something else more suited for me.
id have the gut the pre, which isnt a huge deal, but id have to find a way to fill all 4 of those holes with something.
and the string spacing is way too big, so id have to get a new bridge.

5/21 update. Picked up my bass from my tech a few days ago. I changed the bridge to the carvin string through. The same one on the SB5000. I also ran across some used Sadowsky Hum cancelling pickups on the forum and threw those on the bass.
I cannot tell you how much the bridge changed my B string. Its a superior B now, not ok or good enough but excellent just as good as my 35" Lakland 5501 I sold. Tension is equal and ringing like a bell up to the last fret. The clarity and sustain across all of the strings is great and its staying in tune SOLIDLY.
I loved the Dimarzio pups and was really really hesitant about taking them out but I'm glad I did. The Sadowsky Jazz pups are the best on the market for a Super Jazz tone. Bridge pickup has a little more burp. My only complaint is they are almost 2 hot. The output is scary on these things. You gotta be careful not to ruin your rig. I will definitely be adjusting my on board preamp to lower the signal. The DiMarzio's are not low output by a longshot but the Sads are really hot. I would definitely go the Dimarzio's if I ran my bass passive alot. The pickups are more natural sounding and have a tasteful midrange presence. You can't go wrong either way.
I also wanted to add a note about my mod to solve the neck dive on this bass. I added a 9/32 socket from an old socket set I had between my straplock on the upper horn and the bass and got a longer screw from home depot. Made sure the screw was slightly thicker to make sure it seated properly. Had to file the screw head down to fit in my strap locks but between this and the new bridge the bass balances perfectly. Instead of spend $100+ on hipshot ultralites, I went this route. $300 bass $100 pickups $70 preamp $40 bridge $2 screw $0 socket $125 labor. $627.00 for a killer customized 5 string jazz bass.
This bass will hold its own with anything out there and its been fun putting it together. Thanks again for TB'ers and the TB classifieds for all the information.

Nice! I put a Bad Ass on mine and It was an improvement. I could just imagine the string through. What preamp are you running? I am ready to get a set of Sadowsky pickups as they fit these basses. My question is why are these pickups good if they are going to ruin your amp??
