Example of a new wave folk band I just can't stand... Mumford and Sons. I know someone out there thinks they're the coolest thing since rubix cubes but what the hell. At first I heard them on BBC radio now they're everywhere. I have to really concentrate just to figure out what the hell he's even saying.

Man I hang with a bunch of hippies, and lots of acoustic get togethers and it is always, Dead , Young, and Dylan getting picked. I don't hate them but it does get old. And if you think doom is slow try picking some of those Dylan tunes. the beat...wait for it... wait for it...better have fresh string on that acoustic or the chord won't ring out long enough to last till the next chord

If you are looking for a good bourbon that you can get at the PLCB stores then try Corner Creek Reserve. They don't usually have it on hand at the stores but you can special order a bottle and have it delivered to your local store (you can special order even a single bottle). The price is under 25 bucks and the best bourbon for under 40 IMO.

I messed around with some mandolins, banjos, lap steels, dobro, and fun to tinker with but learning the new tunings and what not, and in the end is anything as really useful to know how to play as guitar, bass, and drums. If anything I would like to mess with learning the keyboard a little more and drums to learn timing better.

I tried some Dad's Hat Rye not too long ago, which is made outside of Philly. Was incredibly disappointed, unfortunately :P

I honestly just heard them the other day for the first time and I don't get it. I imagined that I wouldn't like it going in but I at least thought it would make sense to me as to why other people like it. Those guys are just so bland.

so my band Burrows www.facebook.com/burrowsct is losing one of it's founding members/guitarists before the end of the month as he was offered a sweet position out of state that he couldn't pass up to which he is relocating for. He wasn't looking to leave, i believe the offer was kinda all of a sudden and through his networking at his previous employer. We're all super bummed out as he is a cool dude, and we love the music we've been writing.
We plan to continue on we've been a trio (though our recording has two guitars but one left right after, kind similar situation actually), so we gotta find a new guitarist, which I absolutely dread, and guitarists that are good and have decent gear are very difficult to find in CT for this kind of music eventhough i feel we get a good amount of praise/popularity in the area.
I'm miserable without a functioning band so I don't like to hesitate and i've been searching and spreading the word as much as I can, we haven't played a show since early december and we had to cancel our next show because of all this. I was in touch with a guitarist recently who seems very much into our music and stoked to give it a try BUT my hesitancy is that he has kinda crappy gear. He's got a 2x12 combo of some sort and just bought a steinberger baritone guitar that he was gonna buy anyways but plans to use for this band over his strat that he uses for other stuff. I hate steinbergers personally, but I can't possibly see how a band goes from using les pauls and SG's to someone use a canoe paddle for guitars. We're a beefy band. Where's the beef with a steinberger? We also play with two guitar cabs, one on each side which has sounded amazing since doing so kinda recently and we never wanna go back to one guitar cab unless it's a small/smaller venue. A 2x12 doesn't seem like it's gonna balance out. Am I being too picky/gear snobby? my drummer doesn't think it's a big deal, but he's a drummer knows nothing about guitar, but when I sent him a pic of the guitar this guy plans to use my drummer's response was "that's probably the worst thing I've ever seen" hahaha.
What do you guys think about the gear of those who want to audition? do you ever communicate your preferences of that sort? do you not bother, say "no thank you", if they use crap? I think any/every other guitar can work in our situation over that canoe paddle with active pickups (active pickups aren't thaaat bad, jus sayin). At the same time, beggers can't be choosers and if this guy is a totally lame as a dude then the gear stuff is a moot point. And who knows maybe he is cool, though I have no clue of what his playing/writing ability is cuz he doesn't have any recordings of his own at this point. Curious about your experiences and feedback my stoner/doom/sludge amigos.

I really think the popularity of the new wave smurf folk has to do with identity issues rather than musicianship. My brother is a sales manager for an organic food supplier in California. He talks to me about hormone free beef and pesticide free veggies like he's part of some crazy cult at times. Everyone wants to save the planet... folk has that whole "save mother earth" niche going. Next thing we know, all the hipsters are forming drum circles and creating bands. There would be nothing wrong with any of that, except the music blows. They forgot some vital things, like learning to play their instruments and sing.

Everyone goes out and buys into it regardless of how good it is because they feel like they're making a difference listening to it. It makes me sick.

yeah leave the politics out of the music, or better yet maybe just leave lyrics out, man Sigur Ros has it right just make noises and hum along with the melody

MattS, I feel the same way, there is something to be said that a good guitar player may not have the equipment yet or whatever and if you overlook them because of it you could be missing out. But then if your into this genre and want to play in a band, you need to realize that big rigs are an important visual aspect, that something like folk doesnt really have. Theres a fine line between gear snobbery and just getting the job at hand done, with whatever you have. That sucks that hes gotta leave though, arent you guys a pretty established band?
