Squier/Doom Bassquiers 49: Squiers The Beef?

The band before bongripper (crappy technical death metal stuff) had a singer who decided one day that he wasn't going to do vocals or be in the band because he wasn't interested in it anymore. He was moving out of state soon and was leaving the band anyways, but he decided to quit when we still had several shows booked.

He refused to play the shows despite having agreed to do them, so I ended up doing bass and vocals at one, and we got a friend to fill in for the last show. After a couple of months we just turned into bongripper when our drummer broke his double kick pedal at a practice, so we turned all the amps up and just played slow riffs.

Everything has been better since, singers are terrible.

Morning everybody. I was determined to be in a good mood today. It's friday after all, and we have an awesome show booked tonight. I checked my email and there's one from guitar player/singer dude. He doesn't want to sing in the band anymore. At all. He says he'll do tonight's show and that's it. We have nothing booked (officially), but he says he won't sing at another gig.

That's fine if he doesn't want to do it and just focus on guitar. But now we have this horrible headache of trying to find a lead singer and until we do, NO GIGS.

Tonight is our third show, we're starting to get a following, venues are noticing us, our recording with dude's vocals is nearly done and now we have to ****ing stop because he won't tough it out and continue to sing until we find a replacement.

He acknowledged that it will probably take a long time, especially since we don't want a sludge-style scream/growler. He says if it takes too long we can continue to write new stuff and be a studio only band. I have no interest in that. I can't devote that much free time to a band that will never leave the basement. So I told him if that happens, I'm going to start looking for other bands, or start something on my own.

We'll hash it out tonight before the show, but jesus christ I'm pissed off.

I'd tell him you had a bunch of dudes from this thread listen to your clips, and we thought he sounded fine. Maybe the positive reinforcement will work. Just a thought.

Or smash his hand in your car door so he can't play guitar and tell him "Now, you're the singer."

No good reasons. He's on the phone all day at his job and his throat gets sore and he thinks doing both is holding him back from being better at either one.

I can understand the second point ok, but seriously he's doing fine and improving all of the time. He's just so unsure and self-conscious that he's convinced he's completely terrible. So rather than continuing to practice and get better he just wants to stop.

He goofed a solo at our last gig and spent 10 minutes telling the bartenders how much he sucked, when they were telling him how awesome the band was. I had to put a stop to that.

I'm just frustrated. I know the drummer is on the same page as I am so we'll see what we can bully him into tonight.

Haha, yeah! I like the car door idea.

I'll let him know about all of the positive things you guys said. I'll even dig up a link. I didn't tell him about it at the time because he didn't want anyone to hear the recordings.

****, maybe I'll just have to do it myself. I'm no singer but I can pull off a Pike-esque drone.

Everyone is self conscious, some people learn to deal with it others not so much. We make at least 1 mistake a show that seems completely obvious to us and it sucks, but honestly either people don't notice or don't care because no one has ever mentioned it. The other thing I learned is to stop comparing myself to others, I understand my limitations and work within them. I work hard to improve but I don't try stuff I am not comfortable with when playing live.

Get a bunch of hot Bettys to keep coming up to him and compliment him on his singing.

Yeah, I understand this, and so does our drummer. No one notices or cares about mistakes. ****, Tony Iommi probably comes off of stage going "****, I totally bombed the solo on paranoid". The comparison thing is something we all need to keep in mind as well.

Words of wisdom, my friend. I'll pass them on.

I barely listen to music, lately talk radio. Now who has the grey bush?

My cd player Squired the bed and have been lazy about installing the new one in the cold weather, so been forced to listen to radio channels, and they are horrendous. Even the usual alternative channel now plays all that synthesizery pop singer crap. So one day I just turned on NPR and will be listening to that till Spring I suppose. Bought I am also closing the door from 40 to 41 so that might be part of it.lol

Bummer about the singer/guitar player. Sounds like my drummer, super talented at anything he touches, but always talks trash about himself. It's depressing. He has some anxiety issues and whatnot. His brother and I have been trying to toughen him up. Sometimes it seems like he'd rather be in the bottom of a hole climbing out, because that's all he knows. He's also alway worried about how people view him, and appologizing all the time.
Stop it! Quit being a pu$$y! But seriously don't worry about those a$$holes. Relax.
My guitarist and I tried singing a bit at last practice it was terrible. haha. My guitarist thought he did ok, but I really don't like much of how he sings. He did a cool little Opeth impression for 30sec. We'll have to figure out how we want to approach that later. I think we should focus on the music first. Then come at the lyrics and singing after, it will most likely work out better that way.

There's definitely anxiety issues, which I'm sympathetic to, I've had problems with it my whole life, but I deal with it and get the hell up there and play. If he'd do that enough I think he'd chill out a bit. I really don't have any sort of performance anxiety anymore.
