Squier/Doom Bassquiers 49: Squiers The Beef?

Random thought... they have tube amps, solid state, modeling etc... why hasn't anyone made a system similar to how tube valves work but made with lighter materials and able to achieve higher watts for the space used? Let's get some egg heads and scientists working on that one.

people have tried, and they have failed. People are trying all the time actually but generally its not easy to do. Tubes are inherently flawed devices or atleast inherently poor in some aspects and its hard to develop a very efficient device that can emulate something so flawed. Its kind of a contradiction in aim

well, all kidding aside, for a SS Pbass that I paid $125 for and popped $40.00 worth of Fedner USA guts into, the SX is really a pretty good bass. If I were a gigging man, I would do a gig with it, without hesitation.

Well the Peavey VB3 is a 300 watt all tube amp that weighs 37 pounds. From my understanding it uses a switching power supply rather than a traditional power transformer. Transformers are often what weigh the most in amps. That is certainly a way to get the weight down.

I have never so much as seen one in person, and I have never personally spoken to anyone who has heard one so I have no idea how they sound.

I am in the camp that says you can add all the tubes you want but without big iron transformers you wont achieve the same results..

Dunwich might be able to help us with this but I think the VB3 still has an output transformer just not a power transformer. I agree with you though the audio transformers have a lot to do with tone. That is probably why people hear a difference between Class D amps and lead sleds. If your ultimate goal is total clarity then there is no reason why a Class D amp won't work, but to make them sound good (because even people who want a "clean" sound actually want a little harmonic distortion) tubes and saturation circuits are added to make them sound like they have transformers.
 
I still do the whole "sell to buy thing" and I'm on the track of making about one custom bass build purchase a year at this point. I haven't sold anything I've had built for me, but I do buy sell and trade the entry and mid level stuff I have. Usually just because I do so many projects in different tunings and I don't like to change tunings on one instrument a lot.
 
actually the PT also plays a roll. The PTs in tube amps run with unregulated supplies results in sag even in the tightest of bass amps and this results in distortion. Not heavy clipping but when you play loud it drops some voltages across the amp.
