Well that's a real kick in the balls. It's basically as good, if not better than my SX project fretless that I just put an ebonal board on. Cheaper, no labor involved, ready to go. I haven't heard or played this one, but mine doesn't sound that good. Sonofabitch!

Squier Jaco Bass -- Hmm

Yes, I see a teeny-tiny Jaco there (and about 10 other bassists)
I love it that they make us "figure it out" quite challenging for young bassists and those of us who study the bassist, not the bass...don't you think?
Well, when they coat the neck with "Marine Epoxy"....then and only then will I see the true Jaco Inspiration....
Anyone out there been daring enough to try that yet?
I'm sure that if they intended it to be "Jaco Style" in ANY way, Fender would be smart enough to use that as a promotional tool, so I'm not convinced yet it has anything to do with JP.

I've played SX's and they are very overrated. For the price, they're great, but when people start favorably comparing them to MIA and MIM Fenders, then I have to question their abilities to distinguish quality. To each his own I guess.The_Ryst said:
The big factor here, and it is huge for me, is that SX does not make a 1.5" neck on any of their basses. You buy one of their Jazz basses, and you get a Precision neck. Might not be a big deal for some, but for me it is. Once I saw the Squier has the 1.5", I'm getting in line.

and i personally dont see how any can sell a bass as a jazz bass with what is basically a P bass neck on it?

If it plays well and sounds good, it is money well spent no matter whom or what past image(s) it recalls. Most people in the audience don't have a clue who used a bass similar to it years ago.

yea i pulled the frets out of my sx and coated the neck with epoxy, didnt turn out perfect but it was def. playable i bet if i tried it again i could get it.

The MF site shows "expected in stock 8-15-06."
The cats at elderly instruments made it sound "as if these were a limited run" instrument, and siad they were only getting "one."
I'm real curious to hear what this bass is like once it starts getting in people hands.
The '80's Japan built Squires were really nice. Some of the later model ones I've played were not so nice...however, it may be that with a little shop time spent on trussrod, nut, bridge, it could be a little budget sweetheart...
both fender and squire websites are down at the moment, where are these made? Korea? Japan? Mexico?
I find nothing on the duncan website about the duncan designed JB101 pups, nor in the duncan forums.

Interesting to note that the Jaco looking Jazz, and '75 looking Jazz both use the same Duncan Design JB101 pup...hmm...
...Just have issues with Fender using an artists name to sell an instrument when the instrument is completely different from what the artist use's/used. I'm sure it's a good bass though.
I bought an SX frettless jazz, had to return it- had a bad neck, low B on the A string was unsable. Always wondered if I just had bad luck with that one.

Frankly I like the warmer tone of rosewood on my fretless. Sure ebanol or ebony will give you a crisper, mwah-ier, or more Jaco-like tone, but not everyone wants that.
Different strokes for different folks, and I'll take my FB's with a hint of warmth.
