Squier Jaco Bass -- Hmm

I can't believe this. World's most famous fretless bass is now available in a $280 version.

Dunno what to say, agathis body, duncan designed pickups and ebanol fretboard.

Thoughts?

I just saw this one the other day. To me, as I have never had a fretless, it looks pretty good, and for the price you really can't go wrong with that. I'm interested in seeing how it plays.

I'd like to take it for a cruise. Agathis doesn't bother me & w/the alnicos, I'll bet it cooks. I know everyone's gonna identify it w/the Jaco reissue, but for me, it seems like an econo version of those Chandler Jazz kits (the tiny ad in guitar player magazine) I used to fiend for way back when I was a little bass grom.

I doubt it sounds bad. Agathis is similar to Mahagony tonally, ebonal sounds good, and SD has never had a bad sounding pickup to my knowledge. I kinda want one too...

I just noticed this one... I like this one too. I may reconsider buying and modding my friends Squire P with a allparts block neck now. I could spend $150 more and have an extra body laying around!

the best part is the ebonal fingerboard... the MIM has rosewood, and the squire gets ebonal(not real ebony, but still)?

Ebonal was most likely used to simulate the epoxy type hard fingerboard finish, since its a synthetic material that is very hard. Looks pretty good for what it is.

Man, I'm tempted! I just bought a Lakland 55-01 and shouldnt buy another bass but I've looking for a cheap fretless (with some other option other than rosewood) to try out. Luckly, Im going to be out of town when they come back in stock. If they still have them when I come back, I may have to buy one.

I'd take my chances with an SX first. Then I could afford mods, and SX has many more happy customers IMO.

This model just came out, so I dont know how valid the SX comparison is. This could blow them away for all we know. I doubt it, but who knows. Essex's arent that great. My fretless had a few uneven spots on the board..
