Squier Jaco Bass -- Hmm

I read the review in Bass Player Magazine about this Squier and am really "jazzed" to play one in person. I had a Fender Standard fretless a few years back and sold it a few months later. The pups were really noisy and just didn't have a pleasing tone. I'm excited to try out one of these beasts. Looks like Squire got everything right. And for $300, even I can afford one.

I'm really happy with this bass! I have to remind myself to play my old StingRay now... Like most here have said: for the money, this bass is excellent. If you're looking to get into some fretless but don't want to spend too much (like I was), I'd say this is the bass for you! I wasn't even intending to play fretless live, but now I can't wait to play it at an upcoming gig (only 3 weeks to go!)

I got mine back at the start of January for $520 Aussie (do not pay the $699 rrp they normally carry).
Im happy with it. I havn't owned another fretless, so can't really compare it to anything, but none the less, im happy with it
I bought it because I have been toying with the idea of getting a fretless but have never found one i wanted to shell out big bucks for. This was a cheap alternative (and not a nasty one).
As others have mentioned, when I think 'cheap bass', I think poor fretwork firstly. Obviously this isn't an issue here, so thats one hurdle out of the way. Im also quite impressed with the over all fit and finish the squire has.
The price of the bass hardly warrants an in depth review... If your toying with the idea and have the cash, just give one a go

I finally got the chance to play two of them , plus the 70's J , and was not that impressed 
The Fretless had no growl , no attack at all , i even did 2 different setups in the store , abut could not get the real attack and growl i wanted. The quality does seem better than the old squiers , but here in sweden , there is not a big price difference from the MIM FL.
I found the 70's J to seem a lot worse built than the FL , the fretjob was horrible , and the neck bolts.

Bought mine over the weekend, got a good price of £215. Tonight is the night when I properly get the chance to amplify it with a band rehearsal - into my brand spanking new Eden NC115 So I'll give a good full review later. Acoustically though, the bass sounds very good, and to me that's a good test for a bass - it makes the job of any good amp so much easier if the bass has a good acoustic tone (IMO anyway).

I had a set up done, put on a bone nut, and some flat wound strings. I love how it sounds and feels. I like it better than my MIM fender jazz. It sounds great with the Seamour PU. I also like the ebanol fingerboard too. No complaints. Enjoy.
I'm bringing this one back up because I'm seriously considering a VM fretless. How do you guys feel six months later?
nah. Squiers dont have the neck (I think) for a good fretless. The wood is too low quality. I played fretlesses at GC today and the squiers were the worst and Warwicks and the Ken Smith were the best.
Yeah, but you're comparing $2000 instruments to $280 ones. What did you expect? I'm only in the market for a starter, because I've never played fretless. I don't want to drop a lot of cash into one right away. I'm used to the Fender style, so that's another reason why this one sticks out.
i dont own one, but I have put in a good 4-5 hours on one just from multiple trips to GC, and I dont think anyone could go wrong for the money, The only thing i dont like about it sometimes the multipiece bodies are ugly if they dont use quasi-matching pieces....but still, its ebonol, and its a jazz....5 stars
I've owned one since May, and I can tell you it's AWESOME, especially for the price...it's so fun to play and who cares if it doesn't have the exact sound of the $500+ fretlesses out there, it still plays and sounds great. I can't believe this bass isn't more expensive, actually..
Just MAKE SURE you buy flatwounds for it or the stock rounds will eat up the fretboard...I use D'Addario chromes and they work very very well, I love them.

That model sells for $350.00 (Canadian)over here, add a set of flatwound for 50 bucks and your only $125.00 away from an MIM Jazz fretless... Considering, are those still worth being looked at?

I don't count string costs, but it would probably wash anyway because I'm sure the MIMs are shipped with rounds. The Squiers are $280 typically.
It seems to me MIMs would have the same problems (cheap bridge and tuners) as the Squier, but be $170 more expensive. I don't worry too much about the different woods used at this price level. One of the guitarists I play with has an agathis Ibanez, and it sounds fine.
