Squier Jaguar Short Scale Club Part 3

That does seem a bit heavy. On the bright side, though, it probably has no neck dive whatsoever.

I'm not sure, I literally started playing bass a week ago. I have 2 neoprene straps and the neck doesn't "dive" when I have the straps on, but the guitar does fall down towards the neck if I just have it resting on my leg when sitting.

How much could I possibly lighten this thing? If I get lightweight tuners/other parts what could I expect to reduce the weight by? Trying to figure if its worth doing versus looking for another bass. I'm pretty sensitive to weight.

Lighter tuners aren't going to help that much, maybe 1/2 pound at best. You might call Sweetwater and ask them to weigh the other black ones they have in stock. They have been averaging about 7 pounds, and at 8.4 your Jag even weighs more than my MIJ Mustang at 7.5.

You might want to use a strap when you're sitting, to get the weight of the neck off your fretting hand.

Hey guys I'm new to the forums and I just get a new Jaguar SS bass in black, it's awesome. It's stock right now but I'm planning to mod it.
I need some advice here:

Hipshot Ultralites or Schaller M4 90 or ???
Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound set or Dimarzio DP-126? (I'm looking for a fat low end tone)

Also I want to get it a high-mass bridge, was thinking to get the hipshot style-A brass bridge, what do you recommend me?

I kept mine stock except for the pickups, strings, pickguard and nobs.....

Dimarzio DP-126 was my choice for pickups.....

Ti SS Jazz Flats were strings of choice....

Could not be happier.........

Others will, no doubt, have other suggestions!.........

Enjoy your bass whichever way you go....

Like Fat Freddy said, enjoy your bass. I can't explain it but there's really something special about the little fellas. I'm not much use on the "recommendations" front. I'm afraid. I put Seymour Duncan SPB-2 & SJB-2 pickups on mine, and a Gotoh 201B-4 bridge.

You'll probably end up with as many different suggestions for "upgrades" as there are people who answer your post. :)

while i love the sound the mustang puts out out of the box, i might end up with a new bridge. btw, how are the tuners for you?

Stock tuners on mine are pretty sloppy actually, thankfully they seem stable once dialed in. I picked up some "Hipshot licensed" tuners for it, but have not had the courage to drill new holes without access to a drill press.

Edit: I too went with the Gotoh 201B-4 bridge. It fit the original holes perfectly, so no drilling.

I don't think the DP-126 set is what you're looking for then. I got it and it struck me as a really good replacement set that evened the tone out and gave the whole sound a good solid balanced feel. I like it but I'm not sure it's the "fat low end tone" you're looking for.

As far a bridges go I'm a Schaller fan.

That's really cool!
Can you elaborate on this a bit? Did you put any finish on the bare wood? What did you do with the electronics? Stock "P" pickup with new covers or something else?
Thanks! Heres my thread on the process and details! In short, yes I did tung oil then a spray nitro lacquer, but only the thinnest coat. Its a seymour duncan quarter in a 1983 fender P pickup cover (the fender pickup wasnt up to snuff)

Been playing my SS for about 18 months now and I can't get over how much I'm enjoying this little thing. It's currently looking like a dog's breakfast after I've snapped a tuning head off (so now I carry pliers for mid-set adjustment...) and the paintwork isn't great after I've slammed it into the floor a few times, but it's a champion little runner.

I've got an audition coming up for a group who are in the process of signing a big US deal and even though logic tells me I should take the nicest rig I have, there's still little voice telling me to take the battered old SS and rock the poopie out of it. My pro friend who is all over the british folk circuit ended up picking one up to replace his vintage Musicmaster as a touring bass after playing mine, so there's at least one out there playing big stages.

The only issue at the moment is the strap buttons are working loose from the wood even after judicious application of wood glue so I think there's a fill and drill in it's near future. I need to restrain myself in the process because I've got a mate who's getting into respraying guitars who's got a few cans of this awful day-glo Sunny D orange that is begging for a tasteless refin...

Are you aware of the "toothpick trick" to fix strap button issues?

Oh yes. Toothpick'd, wood glue'd, and duct taped up currently. I think it's my playing angle/position plus stress from chucking it around with strap locks on but it's just pulling the wood right out. I've got some extra long screws that came with my schallers that I'm going to use after I fill and drill.

I went with one of these: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

They supply extra long screws too.

This may be a setup question better suited elsewhere, but I thought I would check with the club and see if anyone else had this issue: Does anyone else have a buzz/rattle from the saddle on the jag? Specifically mine rattles if I hit an open D with a little more than average attack. Just curious if this is a common issue and if anyone had any tips for addressing it.

Also, does anyone know would a hipshot kickass bridge work on this bass? I think the saddles are adjustable from right to left to address any differences due to scale changes.

Yes the Hipshot kickass bridge fits with no mods. Not much difference in sound that I can tell but it makes it easy to adjust intonation exactly.
