I got my answer.... It's a whole lot different. When your main basses are either 34-35" scales it feels sooooo short. I'm really loving the playability, and the tone. I think I'll probably try the bridge pickup magnet mod, but other than that I'm am very happy with it.

Whoever had this bass before me definitely loved SS rounds. The frets are a bit worn (not bad, but it's visible) and she's lived through some epic tales... But it plays even and easy with no buzzing across the entire neck.

While I'm at it, can I get some suggestions for half-rounds? (and a number?)

I have noticed that they don't get much love on any of these forums, but I use D'Addario XL Half Round ENR71S Electric Bass Short Scale 45-100. Strings and Beyond has them for about $25.00 a set. I used to get them from Bass Strings Online, but the last time I looked there, they weren't listed. Anyway, I like them, not sure why nobody else does, but if everybody liked the same things, There wouldn't be so many choices.

Welcome to the club! Jason at bassstringsonline is showing Invalid Link Removed. I've never tried them, so I can't give you a review, though. If you register your TB membership with BSO, you'll get an extra discount.

As far as the Jazz pickup goes, I put a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] in my sunburst SS Jag because I wanted it to be hum-canceling. I might have gone with the discontinued Fender Super 55, but it was not available at a decent price at the time. The Jag's stock P pickup sounded great already, so I only changed out the J.

If you have a bit of neck dive, I found that since the pots are so small, the control cavity has plenty of room for some stick-on lead wheel balancing weights. My red SS Jag didn't dive, but the sunburst (which only weighed in at about 6 1/2 lbs) took about 8 full ounces of weights to balance well.

I was more looking for hands on experience, as I currently have none.

As far as the dive goes, I haven't put it on a strap yet. I'll find out soon enough. Good idea about the weight, makes sense.

I'm using TI Jazz flats on mine.....Sorry, not much use to someone looking for half rounds....

I've just never tried them. I'll have to see if they have a heavy gauge set.

It looks likeInvalid Link Removed. I think they'd be a bit too light for my liking on a short scale (light Es tend to get a little floppy on the shorter scale). I think my first choice to try would be the GHS ( .049 .062 .084 .108). They're both about $25 a set.

TI Jazz flats are bright compared to most other flats, and their short scale* set has a thicker E than their long scale, which is good. They are pricey, but they last and last.

*TI short scale strings are really medium scale compared to others. However, they are so flexible that I've never had a problem when a bit of the flatwound portion ends up wound on the tuning pegs.

I have those D'add half rounds on my Jag SS right now..they play and sound a lot like flats.
They are not stiff. A few years back I didn't like them..but now I do.

My stock tuning machines have a fair amount of slop to them (i.e. you have to go pretty far before you hear a change when you're going from tuning up to tuning down or vice versa).

I already replaced my nut with a GraphTech Black Tusq XL, so tight nut should not be the issue.

I'm considering upgrading the tuners, but don't need uber-expensive uber-light. I'd like to keep the traditional Fender peg shape. Any recommendations for a reasonably-priced, but functional set of replacement tuners?

Have no issues with mine (stock). Put a HipShot D-tuner on the E string, no issues there either.

No, I was hoping that the teflon in the Black Tusq XL would solve the problem. (It existed with the stock nut, too.)

Certainly worth a try before replacing tuners, I don't suppose there's such a thing as a nut that's too slippery.

You'd be shocked at how much play there is in a precision machine tool . Anybody that's run a lathe or milling machine will have no problem with a cheaparse open tuning machine LOL.
