Neck dive, sounded average with a couple of different brands of strings, fit and finish merely OK, massive flipper off the end of the neck. And I just didn't enjoy playing it. Happy?
I wouldn't say happy, but your opinion about it makes a bit of sense now.

On the "not every bass is for everyone" side of things...when I first started playing again, I went looking for a smaller, lighter bass (the Jazz bass that's my avatar is an absolute beast). I went out to Guitar Center and such, and of course I was far too embarrassed to plug anything in, but I tried out all the short-scale stuff they had (which wasn't much). I liked the Mustang PJ the best as it was the least neck-heavy. But all of the basses I tried were somewhat neck-heavy, because the bodies are light, and that tends to be what you get.
I tried the Mikro and didn't care for it but I know that a lot of people love it and one of these days maybe I'll try it again.
I later bought a PJ but remembered how good the Jaguar SS felt in my hands. I am very glad that I bought one and I'm enjoying it tremendously. It sits by my workspace so I can pick it up whenever. It's fun to play.
I'm not sure who expects perfection from a $199 bass but I'm kinda scratching my head over someone who feels the need to trash something other people enjoy that they personally don't like.

So bummed they're gone. So glad I got one. My hope is that Squier will return to the short-scale market soon.
I paid $365 (Aud) for my Jag in a hard case shipped to me. Fit and finish is brilliant, particularly the neck and fretwork. I then bought a Greg Bennett Corsair second hand for $105 with the intention of cutting it up to make a travel bass. I was quite surprised at the sound of the P pickup. Hotter and more hi-fi than anything I have.
At new prices in Australia the Corsair was actually more than the Jag ($399 with no case) and suddenly I was wondering whether I should cut up the Jag.
Obviously basses in this price range can vary in their quality and my Jag is a very good one whereas the Corsair was not.... the opposite to A9X's experience. The fretwork is almost as good as the Jag and better than I would have expected (better than most expensive Gibson's i've played) but the neck fitting, pots, wiring and pickup mounting were woeful.
So..... I took to it with a jigsaw and router and finished up with this. It actually plays really well with a very nice neck and good tone (who says tone is in the wood) and I've actually used it for a set live once. Yeah.... there's a bit of neck dive.

I seem to remember, some time back, nobody could find a decent case for their Jags. Was the one that came with your Jag branded? Nice job on the woodwork b.t.w.
I've got a bunch of saws and more basses than I need. Going out to the shop to make sawdust.
Well - there's still the Squier Affinity Bronco. But IMO, it's not in the same league as the VM Jaguar SS.
But yes - I hope Squier comes out with a nice replacement short scale.
It was just a standard full scale case. A bit of foam and it's done a good job so far.

No, my friend from over the dutch. I didn't claim the Corsair was better finished (about the same), just that I didn't like the Fender, and the reasons why. The Corsair also cost me about 1/4 used what the Jag did new and the GBC looks like new.
I found a Schaller PJ set in my parts bin, so I think I'll sub them in. It doesn't need them, but why not try them as it's free?
Well, slightly correct...... my GBC second hand cost nearly a quarter of the new Jag. 
The ceramic P pickup in the Corsair is very hot on mine. Louder than the Bill Lawrence P46 I have in my main player but not a smooth sounding.

I never really noticed it before, but the one without the painted head stock that came in the beginner pack has 4 knobs,
and the regular VM one with the painted head stock has 3 knobs.
The control plates not only have a different amount of holes, but they're shaped differently too.
No real good shots of it, but it looks like the back of the necks are finished differently too.
