On your own bass, aesthetics are as valid as any other reason to mod a certain way.I did this too. I don't know if it's actually BETTER, I just like the aesthetics more.

All of the other electronics gets reused, except the pickup selector switch, if there was one.
With that in mind, I really ought to order one or two such pots, and give VBT another try.

You know, I didn't think I would be doing any modifications to my Jag SS, but there is a certain intimacy one gets out of tinkering with a musical instrument.
So, in order to upgrade my Jag SS, I had to make a sacrifice. A couple of years ago, I decided to take up the bass guitar again after being an "ethnic" drummer for 20 years. Rather than keep my classic P-Bass, I sold it and bought a Jazz-style bass. My story is in the threads below.
The sacrifice was that beloved Squier Affinity J-Bass.
I sold it this evening. With the money from the sale, my wife will allow me buy the pickups for the Jag.
But the other reason I sold it was because I wasn't using it. The Jag SS does everything I need, plus I have fully converted to only short scale basses from now on.

Hi, folks. I'm finally getting around to upgrading my Jag's pickups. They will be a birthday gift (next month, but I can't wait
I was just reading about the DiMarzio Model P+Js. They might have a sound I'd like, and the J pickup has hum canceling. My main concern is the height of that J pickup. Have any of you installed these pickups? Do they fit without modification?

DiMarzio´s Ultra Jazz (DP148) didn´t work for me, as I said here: Squier Jaguar Short Scale Club Part 3
The fit was perfect, but the sound is very weak. I guess the J pickup is too close to the bridge on this bass?
Somewhere there was a review of the DiMarzio Ultra Jazz and Model J, and the Model J was generally preferred. I can't remember if it was a Youtube video or a forum.
Is there a special pot for blending? I only see things like "DiMarzio EP1201 500k Pot" at Sweetwater. It doesn't seem to specify a function.
Is there anything I can do to match my Jag SS stock pots, or should I simply buy three news pots to replace them?

The one that's left is heavily modded with a Mustang pickup in the J position,
a DiMarzio in the P position, a 3 way switch, and a flake/glitter pick guard - a SS JagStang.
I'll be keeping that one.
The bass went towards a cymbal I wanted.
I think it was the right choice, but now I don't have the bass I started on anymore.

Not really sad. It served its purpose - I learned how to play with it, and maybe it will be someone else's first bass, and they'll learn how to play with it too
I wasn't really using it much anymore, I've got a lot of other basses I pick up before it now.
The main reason I kept it around was for those "What was your first bass" threads here.

Great way to look at it! Whether it's a bass or anything else with sentimental attachment. It's much easier look let go if you're struggling with the decision.
My Jag SS was my first electric bass. I rarely play it these days but can't currently bring myself to sell it. I picked it up the other night and, despite having a strap-pin extension on the top horn it still has a tiny bit of dive.... more than any other bass I have. I'm now seriously considering selling it with the only thing stopping me at the moment is the possibility that in the next 10 years or so when (if) grandkids come along I'll have a pretty cool, great playing, short scale to hand to them if they show any interest.
SR, is there a reason why you didn't upgrade all your pots while you were at it? I was considering it for two reasons. I thought for very little investment I could upgrade them to 500K, and also I can more easily match the control knobs (I'm probably going to change them).Ordered two today. On that topic, do you happen to know the type of shaft the stock Jag SS has? I've never had one off.
If that's the only problem with it, a set of HipShot Ultra-Lites could fix it. OTOH, if the market there is the same as here, the resale value could put you into a slightly better SS the, hopefully, would not have the same problem
