I was looking for a second small amp/combo to experiment with. Somebody nearby was selling his Squier starterset, a Affinity Precision with a Fender Rumble 15. I was only interested in the Rumble, but I could make a good deal so I also bought the bass.
I plugged the bass in my Ampeg amp and it sounded great, good resonance, sustain. No dead spots on the G string. It certainly needed a good set up: I oiled the fretboard (good looking Indian Laurel), bridge adjustements for good intonation, string height, I straigthened the machine heads.
The P-pickup (ceramic) sounded oke, but to loud on the low frequencies?, not woody enough for me. So I replaced that with a Alnico V pickup from Boston (30 euro). Now it sounds great, never thought a cheap bass could sound so good, and it is very comfortably (weight: 3.8kg).

Here is a random jam poorly played with the Jaguar HB direct into a Tascam interface. A little mid bump and treble cut on the bass. If this is the sound you want, you can spend as much as you want on whatever high end single humbucker down by the bridge bass you want. It may have a roasted maple neck and sparkly pick guard but it ain't going to sound more legit tone wise than the Jag HB.
That does sound good. I've never liked bridge pickup's and not a big fan of humbuckers on Basses. I'm a devout Split coil P guy. All my P/J's have the bridge pickup unwired. I think they picked a really good spot to place that Hum-bucker and it's just far enough away from the bridge to get a good full sound. I'm impressed.
I found my Affinity PJ in a pawn shop. I have about $50 total in it. It was nasty and needed a string. I gave it a good cleaning and replaced the string. Wow. It sounds and plays fantastic. Great setup. Couldn’t be happier.
Noodling around earlier and on a whim, decided to plug in my Dimension. Haven't played it out in years, tried selling it a couple of times, thought about setting it up in BEAD or something just to motivate me to play it, I'm sure we've all been there.
... but today, wow! I'm not sure if it was running it through a VT Bass, or what, but I fell in LOVE with the tone all over again. It's strung with D'addario Balanced Tensions IIRC, and even at low volume the punch was hitting me in the gut. I can't believe I ever wanted rid!
Needs a setup, and there's a lot of treble in the sound so I might try out Pressurewounds to tame that a little. Maybe even flats depending on how that goes. Other than that, now I'm itching to get it back in a practice room, that humbucker sounds huge.

It's beautiful. I have a 5 string and I weren't lucky with QC. The minimum action of G string is almost 3 mm. And it has a big gap (0.35mm) between neck and body!

I had a Squier Standard Jazz in that color for a while, but, at 10lb./2oz., it was heavy beast.
That 50s P is stunning! I never wanted one when they were around, not long ago started wanting one a lot. Will have to keep an eye out for deals. The CV necks are amazing, I feel like I just glide over those vintage frets.
I'm so Amazed with mine, especially since I installed the SD CS "Stinger" Stacked Pickup. I understand why Sting & Dusty Hill use it in their Basses.

These are truly great instruments and I totally agree with you on the neck and vintage frets!
Just added a new wire harness(CTS, Swithcraft) and Cavalier 51 pickup - Cavalier Guitar & Bass Pickups, LaBella Low Tension Flats.

My 77 Vintage Modified J and 70 Classic Vibe P. New and ready to go. Just starting out and I think I'm going to really enjoy this new hobby.
I have several other "better" basses, but this one gets played the most...first grab, longest plays.
It just works... but, the P PU gets in the way sometimes...
Bought this awesome 70's CV P from Sweetwater about a month ago, now I can't find them anywhere online. I know Squier changes their model offerings quite often, but this was a pretty popular item.
I pulled the neck on this one, because, as good as it is, the weather changes caused some fret sprout... Filed those down and rolled the fingerboard edges, and now this bass is simply silly good fun.
I may make a video about it, or some sound clips... It's good.
