YUP, this the post Malak. Specifically, "frustration-fueled rants about the Squier Standard Series and how much of a wall-banging pain in the butt they are to modify". Which means someone is going to charge me more $$$ and I am sure, does not have the experience you do in making these mods. Thats what got me all GAS'ed up...Contemporary Active JB HH on its way! Merry Xmas!

Into everyone's life a little rain must fall....
Well the long story short, the Contemporary Active is going back. One knob came off as I unboxed. E tuning head has too much of a gap in the tooth spacing it seems. To much play with no affect on string tension. Had to tighten al of the knobs and screws o the tuning heads. Not a fan of the Fender Strings. Compared to the Sire, I feel the Sire enables a wider range of tones. 12" radius is probably something I would deal with but as I explained to Fender in my email, this was the equivalent of getting a hair in your mouth on the first bite of an anticipated meal of it satiating your expectations. No matter what the meal is tainted. Look, it definitely could use a set and a little TLC up so lets be a little forgiving but the Sire V7 was ready to run OOTB. No fret buzz, nada...ready.

Considering a 2009 Fender 70's MZ Jazz or a 2005 Geddy Lee. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Spur-of-da-moment change on my Squier VM 70s, after seeing the (new ?) KickAss bridges on Hipshot's page.

Wasn't planning to do any changes on her after the series/paralell pick-up mod and Hipshot Bass extender mods, but I thought a black HS bridge would be a functionnal and cool-looking addition on this wonderful bass. My Fender American Special has an A-Style HS bridge, so the odds of me putting a black KickAss bridge on my Squier Vintage Modified 77 are pretty good...

The KA is a well designed bridge - I've mounted them on a few of my basses.

Maybe a little over a year - it's basically the best version of a BA bridge (style). I've used it on Fender spacing basses and also Gibson/Epi spacing like on my Teiscobird, which is a bit narrower. The adjustable side-to-side saddles make this possible. If Hipshot makes it - it's worth checking out.

Just bought my first Squier Affinity PJ today. Have owned a Peavey, still own a Sterling and all Washburn. Spent a grad total of $65 on my Affinity today. It was very dirty and E string was missing . Added an E I had at home and tuned it up. Sounds very good in my opinion. Spent an hour or so cleaning. Other than a couple of dings, it looks fantastic overall. Don't know what kind of home life it had before. Looked to have been a very dirty home. Those days are behind it. Gonna get a new set of strings and I should be set for a while.

What’s funny here is that we have the same Jazz and Jaguar. I had ordered a VM Pbass in the same blue but it had truss rod problems..

Thank you!!! I love your VM 77, it looks incredible with that bright natural color and the pearloid pick guard and block inlays. Obviously I love your VM 70s in natural, it’s my favorite bass, and the Fender American Jazz cream with the tortoiseshell guard speaks for itself. I love the VM line because it allows me to have a collection of fender style basses for a reasonable price. However I plan on getting a fender down the road but it will be hard choosing what kind. I got the VM jaguar special for 200$ new right before it went up to 250$, the 70s jazz I got at a guitar center sale brand new for 300$, and the VM precision I ordered online from GC around the holidays and they had some kind of discount so I got it for 240$ instead of 300$ and it arrived at the doorstep in great shape. Do you prefer the VM 70s or VM 77?? I know the VM is a little heavier but not by much. I really love the era of the fender 70s jazz basses with the blocks and binding and Squier created a great line to replicate that with the 77 and the 70s.

I fully realize it may simply be a trick of the camera angle, but in both pics it almost looks like the bridge is tilted off to the left by a degree or two.

Honestly, the best well aligned bridge and jazz bass magnet pole piece are Squier CV bass stock 20mm string spacing brass saddle himass bridge.

The VM line is awesome, IMO. Playability-wise, they're not that different from my Fender American Special and are really well-made. I also had a sunburst no-year VM for a short while, but sold it to fund something else (for some reason, I didn't take the same shine to it).

I love the 70s and the 77 for their distinct qualities: the 70s is a beast, plays quite easy, weighs a ton and sounds accordingly. My 77 is much lighter, sounds brighter and has even better playability. She was my main back-up in my previous band (60s to 2000s covers, ranging from motown to metal) as I feel she's a bit more versatile sounding. In my current band (80s rock covers), the 70s is seeing rehearsal and even gig action. Great basses !

I am thinking about replacing the knobs on the Affinity I just bought. Are the shafts the existing knobs are on 6 mm? Are the shafts split or solid? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

After all the thousands I’ve poured into basses over the years I still come back to my ‘96 Squier. Hipshot bridge, EMG electronics, a graphtech nut, and a good setup were all it took to make this thing compete. Maybe I was lucky with this one, or it was a damn good year for Squiers. The neck on this thing is amazing considering I paid $90 for it.
