This arrived on Tuesday, picked it up from eBay for £100 or so. It's a '96 model from China (according to the serial). The scratchplate isn't standard, it's got holes for a pickup cover, and I don't think the knobs are either. I've spent a few hours making it playable (action was sky-high, only a neck shim solved that), and it sounds half decent with a new set of strings, if a little thin. Am going to see how it goes at band practice tomorrow before I decide whether a new pickup is in order. It's also going to be sent away for a bit of work next week, nearly every fret wire from 13 onwards is wonky, but since I don't use that end of the fretboard much, it's not a massive deal. It came with the sticker (which is staying) and the big chip out of the bottom (which adds character).
I didn't know Famous Stars and Straps was big out in the UK. lol
I WANT IN!!!!!!!! I just got a Squier Affinity 5 string for my 15th birthday last week. I had a limited budget ($300), and I went to a Guitar Center. When I told one of the salesmen (is this how you say it???) what my limit was, he immediately told me to get the Squier. I got that and a brand new gig bag!!! Will post pics when I get home.

Here's my California Series J Bass. Picked it up in a secondhand shop - it still had the plastic on the pickguard cover! Sorry about the poor photos -only have my phone camera at the moment. It's actually a beautiful dark wine red colour. The action is fantastic!!!
The knobs are not stock, I replaced them with these off some 25 year old DOD effects units I don't use any more, it originally had chrome domes. I like to have markings on my controls so I know where I am. I reckon these look good too.
From what I can find out, California Series were not marketed in the USA (I'm in Australia), and from their pricing here they are aimed below Affinity level. This bass is way better than the Affinity bass I was originally looking at, and has some more 'upmarket' features such as a 3 ply pickguard and a skunk stripe. It is though, a "Special Edition" but I don't know what that means apart from not being one of the stock colours. My local Squier dealer had never heard of the electric Californias, so maybe they have been phased out.
KiwiGroove, you posted a similar one in part One, but mine has a rosewood fretboard and is in red. Mate, I presume you are in NZ? I have seen another one like this advertised on an NZ website.
If anyone knows anything more about the California Series and what is so special about the Special Editions, I'd be keen to hear about it.
Only downside is the wiring, it looks pretty flimsy and I'll be replacing a lot of it before I gig this bass.

just picked up my 3rd Squier tonite. Added a C.V. 50's P to the collection. Sam Ash had a Fender sale today and the C.V. was marked down to $280 so I picked it up. I'll snap a shot of it tomorrow. Gonna mod it with Hipshot bridge,tuners and add some Fender flats but haven't really thought of the pup yet. Any idea's there? I modded the C.V. 60's P with Hipshot stuff also and dropped in some 62 reissue pups.
Hey whats up fellas, i got this 5 string Precision Squire along with some some other goodies in a trade about 5 years ago. I never play it as im not much of a five stringer, and dont know ANYTHING about it other than the fella that got it ti me telling me that he was the original owner of the bass and he told me he had the pickguard modded, but not the pups. Ive never seen this kind of pup setup in a Precision Squire. Ide really like to know more about this bass and find out stuff like the years in which this type of Squire was made, if its worth a damn, ect... ANY AND ALL INFO ON THIS BASS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
i have that same exact bass..minus the mods. mine is that same green and everything. let me know where you find some parts, i wanna mod mine as well. my pickguard is cracked but i cant find a replacement anywhere. keep me updated with those pickups!

This is my Frankenbass. Anything I want to try out, this is the crash test dummy. My fiver has been lonely for the past month.
I've been trying to think up a mod for the headstock. Anyone here have any ideas that have worked?

A trick finish for the headstock, I've been thinking.
Originally I wanted to match up the pickguard and the headstock in silver metal flake, but I had no luck whatsoever locating a silver metal flake pickguard. Then, when I took off the pickguard to make a tracing of it, I looked at it without and said, 'Aw, yeah...Come to Daddy'.
I finally got to play a CV P Bass and guess what? the tone killed! The bass was flawless, the finish was spot on and it is a great bass! For the money or just in general it is a great bass!
EXCEPT- It has the neck profile I hate! The neck feels too wide and flat and I do not like the feel of the edge of the neck as it feels in my fretting hand!
That neck feel was what shoved me away from precision basses in the first place.
To be fair I have not played the VM precision or the 50's CV p bass, but for me the CV p bass is not it....unless I had a good jazz neck lying about, or a p neck with a chunkier profile and rounded fretboard edges...
But as I say, to each their own. I do really like the Squier P bass special with the P/J pups and jazz neck, so there are options....I for one am glad Squier has gifted us players with so many options!

Sounds like you just love J bass necks. I usually like them myself but this CV P bass just felt right to me. The one you played didn't have rounded fretboard edges? Mine does. The jazz does too.
