Posted this in a different thread , but maybe it belongs here?

I swapped the neck on my yellow Sonic P bass for a nitro 50s Classic P bass neck that I had purchased a long time ago, and swapped the pick guard for a BWB three ply that I had used in a prior bass.

It plays and sounds great!

Did a little mod to mine for fun (EMG Geezer, pickguard and a bridge which I had laying around). Took it to band rehearsal yesterday and it was spectacular. These sonics are great

Doing some cosmetic stuff on my Sonic P Bass. Anyone know the quickest/easiest way to make this white neck a little darker?

Finally played one of these (sunburst, made in Indonesia) over the weekend, and dang! Where were “budget” instruments like this when I was starting out?

Have to agree with @Dan1985, though (and not just because I like his PG mod - go Hawks! ) - those pasty white necks gotta go. The one I played felt fine, but it just looked cheap to me. Can a brother get a little vintage tint up in here?

Agree 100% on the necks. That blinding white looks so bad. I send my necks to my buddy who does an vintage amber tint on them. Really improves the looks.

I have my own theory about why they don't put a tinted finish on those. I think it's because they come from China or Indonesia and there's a lot of differences in temperature and humidity so the chances for fret sprout are high. So if the neck has a vintage tint on it and then develops fret sprout, somebody has to go after the fret sprout with files. So, it could quite possibly dig through the vintage finish. Which would not create any playability issues, but it would look bad. So they just ship them out with a light rubbed finish on them and that's it.. Or it's maybe far, far cheaper, but probably both.

I will usually wait about 3- 6 months before sending them off to my buddy. Just to let the neck wood settle in a bit. Here's one he did for me. As you can see the difference is striking. Surprising how just adding vintage amber to the neck makes the bass look so much better.

Yes and sometimes I also have him shave down the back of the neck as well. He uses an old school kitchen knife for that scraping and forming till he likes the "feel and profile". Then h3e sprays with StewMac ColorTone amber Tinted Aerosol Guitar Lacquer which is nitro lacquer. He always tells me it's really easy and I could do it myself, but I have never been that good at spray painting and sanding. He sprays right over the decals without any issues.

I will say that the pale neck on my 2010 Classic Vibe P (with a gloss finish) has darkened a little with age, so maybe we just have to give these basses 14 years or so to “mature.”

Curious...has anyone dropped an EMG GZR pick up in one of these? If so, was it an improvement?

Well, since you mentioned it. Here you go. Sounds HUGE and dead quiet. I love the Geezer pickup and have them in a few of my basses. Also, I had a set here already so why not? Changed the bridge to a Fender brass hi-mass and changed the PG while I had it apart. Since the 80s was a time of super flashy bright colored guitars I figured I needed to have a slightly unusual pick guard on there too. Just to make it really scream 80s rock and roll. Although, I realize some people may find the PG God awful ugly. I actually like the way it looks. So without further ado, here's Old Yeller! Tomorrow she goes into the MESA WD 800/GK NEO IV for a real workout. It did sound real nice through my Peavey combo though, so I expect it will KILL through the MESA.

New pickups (DiMarzio Relentless Middle), strap, electronics (with a push/pull series parallel setup), pick guard, knobs, and strings. Awesome, beautiful bass, customized to *your* specs. The color and pickguard looks great, blue stripes with yellow.

The Relentless series is great-though I imagine you will like using it in series most of the time. I have the Relentless P version, and absolutely love it on my Squier 40th Anniversary bass.
