Squier vintage modified club, part 2

Am I crazy for thinking about selling my Warwick 4 string for a VMJ5, and some extra cash to mod it as I see fit? The concept of a solid platform, on which to build a bass that I get to make exactly how I want, is very appealing. And I think im getting bored with the Corvette Std 4...

A little bit crazy, yes. Keep the 'Wick. You'll regret it someday. Save for the Squier, it won't take that long and you can customize a la carte after that.

keep the Warwick. have patience and save up for the Squier. they're inexpensive, anyway

Yes but they have set screws to hold the m on. Just line up the screw with the split in the shaft and tighten. The screw will actually lock on the split. If you don't line it up and tighten you may break the shaft half. I hope you get what in saying.

Don't get those. As was pointed out, they are the set screw ones, and although they do fit, it's a bit of a hassle.
Get these ones I put on my VM J 4 string, they fit perfectly and don't require any extra effort, they simply push on-

Second from the left, the "Jazz Bass Import Knobs"
They are the proper push-on type knobs required and they look just like the "real thing",but they cost a lot less.

Yeah, but there's no guarantee the marker lines will line up, depending on the orientation of the pots. I have a simpler (and cheaper) solution .... (see my last post)

Yeah I have the import knobs on my VMJ. Not quite correct (pointed nubs) but close enough. It would be nice if you could get Bakelite knobs; anyone make them?

Hi, I need some help from for VM 5 owners.

Could you approximately tell me what is max string spacing on this bass? I would update bridge for one with adjustable string spacing to get 19mm (can not play anything under that), but not sure how much will neck allow to go in wideness. So, basically, I need stock string spacing at the bridge (total from center of B to center of G string), and neck width at 20th fret

I have a spare Delano pups, J retro preamp and Schaller 2000 bridge and would like to put them in VM5, but local shops don't keep these stock.

Hey Gang! Wanted to ask a question about what size allen wrench is needed to adjust the truss rod on the VMJ 70 and 77 basses? I recently purchased two of these "new" on ebay from what i thought were reputable dealers but they came with the coating removed from the pick guard and no adjustment tools and i haven't been able to find info on the size of the truss rod tool.

ALSO....and i have read through the 51 pages of Part One of the club and didn't see this before. I purchased a 2012 VMJ 70 a few weeks ago and loved it so much that i went on a search to find another one used on Ebay as a backup. Well i did find one and it was a 2008 model. Both of these basses sound phenomenal!! The thing i wanted to mention though is that the 2008 has a slightly larger headstock and a larger neck profile (which i like) then the new 2012. The binding is also larger on the 2008. The weight is different too and seems more balanced on the 2008. The body weight of the 2012 is very heavy but plays like a dream.

One other thing i also snagged the 2010 vmj77 i have is light as a feather compared to the 70. It actually feels like a toy in comparison. At least mine does. That being said it also plays excellently and definitely sings. I am pleased with all three sets of pickups that came with these basses and don't plan on swapping them out anytime soon.
In fact i don't think i will be swapping anything out on any of them. Cheers!!

That's likely becasue the body woods are different. The 77 is Agathis (I think) and the natural 70's one is soft maple.

Just to add to that.....i measured the width of the neck at the 12th fret on both my 70's. My 2008 VMJ70 is 1/8" wider then my 2012 VMJ70 at the 12th. So haven't read anything anywhere about that on any forum but there have been some differences on these basses from year to year. At least on these two basses that were 5 years apart in construction.

i don't have a camera to take a picture of them or i would post them side by side for you to see. The string tree on the 2008 (which also has the larger headstock) is directly between the 1st and 2nd tuning peg where on the 2012 it is very close to the 2nd tuning peg.

And you are right C.! it is definitely Agathis. But there is also a substantial difference in the weight of both my 70's. The 2012 is significantly more BODY heavy compared to the 2008 70. Love them both!

Wanted to add one more thing. I own many high end basses. 2 Elricks, 3 Mike Kinals,an original Curbow petite fretless,American Standard Jazz blah blah blah .....for the money these Squires VM's are just INSANELY good but i guess i am preaching to the choir on this forum in saying so

I got my VM fretless Jazz a few weeks ago. It was also my first DIY refinishing job. Still kinda getting used to the passive pickups and getting a feel for fretless in general, but I love the feel of the neck and for $200 + the cost of paint/materials, I figure I can't go too wrong!

here is what i want to do..

I want to purchase the:...

and then the:...

swap the necks and then route the P bass for a jazz pup at the bridge...then add a high mass bridge like a gotoh or badass...and then ad a series/parallel switch....along with black hardware....then i can have what i have seriously been gassing for...

I wonder how much trouble i would have unloading a jazz with a P neck?..lol
