Yeah it gets me when, and I've seen this a couple of times, when someone is awaiting delivery and ask what they should replace the "crappy pickups" with. I just don't understand.

So I understand all the points you are making especially if things go wrong replacing or just playing around cause it's a decent cheap starting point etc. I think that where I was coming from and it was referenced in some of the responses is that it seems to be people are buying the bass with the intention of upgrading it before they even play it and personally I think that these basses are a really amazing bargain for the price as is and sound pretty freakin' great and play really well.
But at the end of the day to each his own, I was just curious.
Some people just mod their basses for the fun of it while some mod their squiers because they really wanna improve on it and spend efficiently at the same time. Think bout it, an american deluxe 5 (2010 onwards) would prolly cost u 1.6k or so. But if u buy a vm 5 and change its entire elect to j.east for example, u'll find urselve spending about 700 only including the bass itself. And u'll get urself an american deluxe V without the fender logo of coz.
So it really depends on the individual.

Squirt is a division of Fender therefore a Squier is a Fender. At least as much a Fender as a Mexican made is.

I don't think it is a VM. As far as I know, all vm are made in Indonesia and have "Duncan designed" pickups. Is yours new?

changed the bridge to a Fender American Deluxe Bass Bridge, changed the controle plate, knobs, and did a road worn finish to the body.

So how y'all feeling with your vint. mod. jazz fivers? I just joined a cover band with whom I occasionally need drop D or even low C, and have a cheapish 4string jazz. I used to own a four Squier VM, but sold it to get this sunburst Tokai of mine. I owned a fiver too back then but didn't really like it's sound and feel, and active electronics...
I like(d) both these 4jazzers for their traditional sound, and could be able to get the pros of a five and a good sound at the same time... But if you forget the B, does the E sound and feel the same, what about slap?

Was this bass new or used? I see them @ $279.00 right now. Someone local has one on CL for $150.00 with a Roadrunner gig bag. I really wanted one with a maple fretboard, but that price is the lowest I've seen for one in good condition w/gig bag.
Today I picked up a VM Jazz in 3-tone-sunburst with the rosewood fretboard, pretty happy to have a four banger again. Gonna bring it to get it set up tomorrow, very excited! I've been an Ibanez SR755 for about a year now and it's nice to have something with that "old school" sound again.
