I still have the old bridge, actually. I should put it back on, get a recording, and put them both up like Dan Atkinson did with the Ash vs. Alder thing. If you can't hear the difference between the stock Squier bridge and a BA II, you're stone deaf.

This sounds a lot like the tonewoods debate. I think I'll actually do the experiment. Be interested to see how it turns out. If you have (or anyone else has) any suggestions on exactly how to run the test (control criteria, etc), feel free to drop me a PM.

I can tell a difference between the standard bridge and any highmass bridge. Always more attack, and I've seen noticeable sustain differences but not always.

Obviously a lot of squier heads here(myself included)but I play an epi rumblekat cause I love shorties. Point is, tb has some clout in the industry. Are there enuff of us to flood fender/squier w/ requests for a cv or vm mustang? Beats the hell out of a bronco.

- shielding tape
- Gotoh 203 vintage replacement bridge (ahhh... brass)
- Hipshot HB7 tuners
- TI Jazz Flats
- Hipshot 3-string tree
- strap locks

OK - on order.

I'll:
- shield the cavities
- change out bridge
- change out string tree
- change out tuners
- add the strap locks
- take the bass and strings to pro for a fret level/dressing and setup

THEN... I will 'just play my bass'. And what an awesome suggestion you give.


I have decided to give these Duncan Designed pups a go (into a Sansamp BDDI/Carvin BX500/BXR 10.4 NEO). If and only if, I decide these just don't have it... I'll then change the pups, pots, cap, jack. That would be a good bit of time making sure I can justify the cost and work.

Open for some suggestions for potential low-noise/vintage sounding/decent output pups that are not DiMarzio Model J's ? (I have P/J and a fretless with Model J's)) I'd like a good old-school tone with a touch of throaty break-up.

My first actually.

My other cheap bass is an SX.

I'll give a quick compare after this modding. My SX's are heavily modded and do sound/play quite nice.
Never would I say Am. Std. nice, but definitely above a non-modded MIM.

I rather like the frets, except for the ends ... a little bit sharp there.
i only trust myself setting intonation.

I don't mind the frets, but I'd like an even playing field and 'budget basses' usually have some funky spots here and there.

The fret dressing will be: filing any sharp edges, leveling out any uneven spots, neck shim, fret drop filing from 12 up, etc... whatever is needed to get it to play nice all over the board. Setup (action, truss rod, bridge adjustents, intonation)usually included - I supply the strings.

It's cost me about $150 in the past.

I should have MIM dollars into this when done and it should play way better than a MIM.

I have MIM money (and untold hours in custom inlay work on the neck) in my VM Fretless, and IMO it sounds better than a MIM.

i received my vintage modified squier '77 jazz yesterday.
It's pretty much what i expected,fit and finish was decent for an insturment in this price range,but the G string has a rattle,which i was able to almost remove but it'll need to be setup properly.
I will replace the oem strings with pro-steels or hi-beams.
Sound wise, it sounded like a jazz bass which is what i wanted.
nice growl. It's definately a keeper.

so after a little truss rod and bridge adjustments i got the relief and action more to my liking but I still will change the stock strings.
