Some people will tell you the wood type makes a difference in tone, some will tell you it doesn't. It is an ongoing (And sometimes nasty) debate that has never, and probaly will never be fully resolved. Me personally. I don't think it makes all that much difference, I never buy a bass because of what wood is used. I only care what the wood looks like when it is finished in a transparent color. And even if you believe that the wood affects the tone greatly, whether one type of wood sounds "better" than another is strictly a matter of personal preference. I wouldn't sweat it, just get the bass that appeals to you the most, sound and playability wise.

That's the best idea, try one, if you're able to. And when you're in the store, don't limit yourself, try any bass they have that appeals to you in your price range.

Yeah thats the only way. Im still new to bass, and have an old Yamaha TRB which is a nice bass. However, I find i play better and faster on a fast neck like the Squire Jazz, and i like the tone of them as well. The Yamaha is good and has a modern type sound, but the vintage type sound with the increased playability is a nice addition. thanks for the help man. Ill let you know how i make out with it. Are any of you VM'ers running through a Tube preamp ?? and how's that tone?

Naw, it's one that I've been eyeing at the local GC for the past few months. So far I dig it, it's got a different enough feel and sound from my Peavey and my Ibanez to keep each of them both interesting and relevant. I've wanted a J Bass for a long time, and I have zero regrets about getting one with an S on the logo instead of an F.


I play mine through my SWR gear, which I guess is technically tube preamp. It's wonderful so far, but is in dire need of a setup - mile high action and poor intonation above the 5th fret. I have no fears that it will be even better once I get the chance to work on that this weekend.

how long has the sunburst fretted been out?
and you vermin that have both, how do they compare?
I was on the fence between CV and VM and coulda gone either way, as sometimes I like a rosewood fingerboard.

If you mean the sunburst/tort/rosewood one, about a month or less.

I got this one about a year ago from Guitar Center for 150.00. Someone had changed the knobs and Pickguard. I just put some pickup covers on it yesterday. Love this bass.

Well, I just scrolled through all 23 pages and figured another pic of a beautiful bass wouldn't hurt, so here's my 2007 VM fretless Jazz that I got from GC in trade for an early production LTD H4 and some other cheap gear. The H4 was a decent bass, but there was something boring about it. The Jazz says 'play me' I love it ;-)

Just got done putting the finishing touches on my Squier VM Fretless, and thought I would share

Mods:

Added BadAss II bridge
Added roman numeral inlays to neck
Added jazz knobs (those silver things are atrocious)
Added Chrome pickguard (looks AMAZING against the sunburst!)
Added Fender Lights flatwound strings

I probably have the dumbest mod in this thread but oh well! I got this bass in a trade for an ATK from a fellow TBer. While it doesnt play or sound anywhere near my AM jazz, it is still a fun bass and certainly gigable.

This mod doesn't affect performance or playability but it is one of a kind and practical...I guess. I've always wanted to do this to a bass so here it is..... no more looking for a bottle opener mid set!
